NFL slaps $25K fine on Jacksonville Jaguars’ tackle Terrance Knighton over hit on Andrew Luck – NFL News
The National Football League (NFL) office has slapped $25000 fine on Jacksonville Jaguars’ tackle Terrance Knighton over coming into helmet-to-helmet contact with Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Andrew Luck, although the player has not suffered concussion
or any other injury.
Andrew was hit by Knighton in the road game last weekend when the Colts beat the hosts comprehensively to revenge their earlier loss in a home game, which is the only win that Jaguars have recorded this season, so far.
The league office said that the video evidence proved that the player had come into contact with Luck and therefore should pay the price for it.
It is not clear if the Jags will go into appealing the fine. So far no comments have emerged from the side since imposing of the fine, but even if they do file an appeal it is difficult to get the ruling overturned.
The important aspect of the fine as mentioned by the league is that the quarterback was defenceless at the time when was hit so there were chances that he could have suffered a head or any other injury.
It is yet another decision that the league office has imposed a hefty fine on a player for attempting to inflict a head injury to another player. This coincides with commissioner Roger Goodell’s remarks a day earlier that the American professional football
was evolving to be safer and safer.
Roger, however, did not touch the demand of the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) who are asking for appointment of independent experts on the sidelines of each game to monitor head injuries. The NFLPA has demanded that the experts should not have affiliation
with any team so their working remains without influence of any sort.
Back to Luck’s issue, the player is a prime target of almost all defensemen. So far he has managed well to stay safe and sound, but the number of challenges and tackles he has been facing is rising with every game.
Colts’ owner Jim Irsay has highlighted a need for offering more protection and on-field security to their offence leader because the team is helpless to win a game without him.
