NFL to consider scrapping Pro-Bowl due to declining quality - NFL News
The Pro-Bowl has been a traditional part of the football calendar with the best players from across the National Football Conference (NFC) and American Football Conference (AFC) facing off against each other.
Recently though the traditional fixture has lost its charm with players not giving their best efforts and the game’s overall quality has been in steady decline.
Even Green Bay Packers quarterback, Aaron Rodgers suggested in an interview after the game that some of his NFC teammates were horrendously poor during the last game played at Hawaii’s Aloha Stadium.
“I’ll be honest with you, I was a little disappointed. There should be some pride involved in a game like that.”
With drooping standards and decreasing interest by both fans and players in the event the National Football League (NFL) is now considering scrapping the Pro-Bowl altogether according to an
ESPN report.
NFL spokesman, Greg Aiello said that no decision has yet taken place but the league is discussing the game’s future with the NFL Players Association (NFLPA).
"No determination has been made yet about this season's game. We have been in discussions with the union about the future of the Pro Bowl."
Last season’s game saw some of the best players from both NFL conferences take the field against each other.
However, their performance and lack of interest forced the crowd to resort to booing as they became frustrated by the quality on display.
Commissioner, Roger Goodell in an earlier interview had stated that the league will try to improve the quality of the event and if nothing could be done they would consider killing the event.
“We’re either going to have to improve the quality of what we’re doing in the Pro Bowl or consider other changes, or even considering eliminating the game if that’s the kind of quality game we’re going to provide. If the fans are responding negatively to
what we’re doing, we better listen.”
Last year’s Pro-Bowl was won by the AFC as they defeated the NFC team by a 59-41 margin and even though ratings for the game were the largest for any sporting event during the week, the game is still considered to be extremely poor.
The league can independently suspend the event but it will have to consult with the NFLPA before making any decision to avoid any conflict.
