NFLPA, NFL Management Council yet to agree moving of trade deadline to Week 8 – NFL News
The National Football League (NFL) is yet to announce enforcement of the professional league players’ new trade deadline as the stakeholders have so far not agreed to and signed details of the deal, which was approved by all 32 franchise owners in May this
year.
A section of media has reported that the league office is waiting for an agreement between NFL Management Council and NFL Players Association (NFLPA) to push the trade deadline from Week 6 to Week 8 of the season.
In a meeting earlier during the offseason, the 32 owners discussed other issues relating to regulatory aspect of the professional league, including the trade deadline and a rule change in the injured players’ placement on the injured-reserve list and a possible
exemption from it.
Both rules were approved by the owners but enforcement of the change required an agreement and approval from the NFLPA.
NFLPA was expected to get involved into a discussion process with the council to know the details before raising any objection or approving them straightaway.
So far, there is no information from NFLPA or NFL circles if any of the planned meetings has taken place and if so, what is the latest talks’ status. In case of any objection from the players' union, the implementation process is expected to be hit by a
delay..
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell had earlier expressed optimism that the change would be enforced some time during the regular season, but since there is no response from the end of NFLPA, it is difficult to ascertain a timeframe for it at this stage.
Although no apparent reason has been given by either side about the expected moving forward of the trade deadline by two weeks, some commentators have cited their discussions with some of the owners arguing that moving of the trade deadline to Week 8 – a
phase when the season is halfway through – makes more sense and looks more realistic.
