NFLPA asks league office for independent experts to monitor, treat concussions – NFL News
After a number of quarterbacks suffering concussions, the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) is weighing to renew its call for making all teams adhere to concussion guidelines.
According the union, some of the teams are ignoring the guidelines and the players who suffer the injuries do not file claims because of job insecurity.
A section of media has cited unconfirmed and anonymous sources disclosing that the union’s executive director DeMaurice Smith is expected to renew the call in near future for appointment of independent concussion experts to monitor and treat head injuries.
The executive thinks the placement of experts who do not have any affiliation with teams on the sidelines to monitor, assess and treat the players for concussion is the only way to check the number of head injuries that the players are suffering.
NFLPA has expressed its concerns over the teams’ failure to know and implement concussion guidelines during each game, which aggravates the problems for the players who suffer concussions.
Very recently four quarterbacks suffered concussion but the league office has not taken any action in the matter of even a single player, which, according to the union, exposes the league’s claims of giving priority to head injuries.
It is yet again that concussion matter has come into the limelight. The league claimed to have appointed an athletic trainer during each game for assistance to teams’ medical staff for monitoring, assessing and treating players for concussions.
The idea to position the trainer was implemented after the controversial handling of quarterback Colt McCoy’s head injury by the Cleveland Browns in 2011. Apparently, the league office has not been engaged in assessing the impact of the trainers’ placement
and it seems to have failed both, teams and players.
The NFL has often been criticised over going lenient against the offenders, especially in concussion injuries. The office faces a large number of lawsuits filed by its former players over failing them in their protection and safety.
It is yet again that NFLPA has lashed out at the league office over allegedly ignoring the issue completely and not taking action against the teams who fail to comply with concussion rules and guidelines.
