NHL: 2010 Awards Show at Las Vegas The Palms Casino, Sedin wins Hart Memorial, Snoop Dog performs

2010 NHL awards finally took place at The Palms Casino and Resort in Las Vegas on 23rd June. This year’s award was infested with Hollywood celebrities; famous personalities like multi-award winning Mark Walberg and 12 times Grammy nominated Snoop Dog. The show was hosted by comedian Jay Mohr who has been featured in top American shows such as Saturday Night Live.

Famous drummer from the band Blink 182 Travis baker and Snoop hit the stage opening the show by performing their #1 song on the billboard “I Wanna Rock” followed by a deeply moving performance by Goo Goo Dolls.

Taking a look at the award ceremony; the nominees and winners were:

Starting from the most prestigious and oldest award “Hart Memorial Trophy” had three of NHL’s top rated players such as Alex Ovechkin, Henrik Sedin and Sidney Crosby in the running. The Swedish player Sedin: taking the trophy home was no surprise; he played incredibly throughout the season for Vancouver Canucks, with an astonishing score of 112, with 83 assists made.

Lady Byng Memorial Trophy:  which was introduced in 1925, the trophy is awarded to the player who conducts a high standard of playing and demonstrates exceptional sportsman spirit. This year Martin St. Louis took the trophy from Pavel Datsyuk who consecutively won it for last four years. Besides Martin and Pavel another finalist in the category who had a chance of winning the trophy was Brad Richards.

Venzina Trophy: Is given to the league’s top goal tender. The top contenders fighting for the trophy included Ryan Miller, Martin Brodeur, and Ilya Bryzgalov. The out take on the trophy was shocking as Ryan Miller took the trophy home even though, it could be argued that Ilya Bryzgalov’s carrer history compared to Ryan’s is proof enough to show Ilya deserved it more. I guess his performance during the Olympics could have played a strong part to his win.

Calder Memorial Trophy: finalists were Tyler Myer, Matt Duchene and Jimmy Howard. This award is presented to the outstanding rookie of the year and it was quite predictable as to whom it would go to, Tyler Myer was the man of the year. He might have had 48 points which landed him at third place amongst the other rookies. But his interesting play and shinning personality added a few more points to his record.

James Norris Memorial Trophy: being awarded to Duncan Keith as the best all-rounder and defence player was quite just. Moreover being presented with the James Norris Memorial Trophy was no shocker. Other finalists being; Mike green and Drew Doughty had nothing on Keith.

Frank J. Selke Trophy:  was taken by none other than Pavel Datsyuk for the third time, he is currently the best forward in NHL and there is no doubt of how competent the lovely player is. He has taken the award from right under the noses of the athletes nominated besides him once again; Jordan Staal and Ryan Kelser.

Jack Adams Award: this one is not meant for the players but for the coach who has been the most supportive and led the team to great victories. Who do you think got it? Dave Tippett was the winner that’s right. It would be unfair to say he was lucky because he could be given this award thrice in a row and it would and should be considered fair. Joe Sacco and Barry Trotz were also nominated but tough luck I guess.

Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy: the finalists who were nominated for the award were, Jed Ortmeyer, Kurtis Foster and Hose Theodore. Although all three deserved the award, but Theodore took it; his dedication to the game is quite apparent through-out his career and his firmness just adds to his miscellaneous qualities as a player.

Ted Lindsay Award aka Lester B. Pearson Award is an award given by the NHL Players Association. Alex Ovechkin is taking Lindsay home for a third time in a row; it definitely shows what an amazing impression he has on his fellow players. Besides Alex only three other people have ever gotten this award three times in history. Sidney Crosby and Henrik Sedin were his fellow nominees.

Bridgestone Messier Leadership Award:  This was Sidney Crosby’s third nominee in a different category this year. Finally Crosby got hold of an award he could take home. The player was said to be leader not just for his team but of the entire league and clearly without a doubt

This pretty much wraps up the stimulating 2010 NHL awards.
