NHL Labour Dispute termed to be All About Money -NHL Lockout Update
A good chunk of the 2012-2013 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season has already been cancelled along with the much anticipated 2013 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic, but most fans are still confused as to why a dispute between the two sides is still
lingering and when they might get to see some hockey action.
This upcoming season was regarded to be one of the most looked forward to in recent years, but after the league and Players’ Association failed to secure a deal after the Collective Bargaining Agreement came to an end on September 15, 2012, the deadlock
just got even worse.
In recent weeks, the NHL made a milestone of an offer by terming it to be 50-50 in nature of revenue splitting, but the Players’ Association was quick to figure out that there would obviously strings attached to it all. In return, the labour union made three
offers of their own in the very next meeting, but had all three rejected in a matter of minutes, showing the unwillingness of both sides to compromise on any of their stances.
At the moment, the NHL is the lowest in terms of the four major sports in North America, including the United States and Canada. The National Football League (NFL) is the highest at $9 billion per season. The NHL stands fourth with $3.3 billion, an increase
of over a $1 billion ever since the previous lockout which cost the entire 2004-2005 regular season.
Seeing these stats, the players are in no mood to let the league off the hook with more money along with decreasing their own share in the team revenue. Seeing how the NHL is making much more than it was previously, players are terming the new cuts to be
not only absurd, but also pointless.
It is surprising to see how the league has tackled the situation thus far as they show no regret in the cancellations been made so far, which in the end, could end up costing much more than they have already.
Developments should be expected in the next couple of days, but counting on something drastic would be the wrong thing to do.
