NHL Latest – Atlanta Thrashers come up with a 4-3 win against the Montreal Canadiens in overtime
2nd January 2011 saw the 573rd game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series hosted by the Montreal Canadiens at the Centre Bell. The match turned out to be tougher than expected. Atlanta Thrashers is in the top half of the table and
was expected to come up with a dominating performance but this wasn’t the case. Montreal Canadiens was up to the mark giving the away side a good opposition. When the match went into overtime, Montreal surprisingly was the stronger of the two teams but Atlanta
successfully scored to win the match 4-3.
Atlanta made a decent start to the match firing a few shots. This dominating start to the proceedings lasted for only the opening 7 minutes. However, the away was able to score during this time to take the lead. The goal was scored through a spectacular
flick shot by Rich Peverley.
The home team started to pull away from Atlanta and absolutely controlled the game. Not only enjoying possession but also coming up with splendid passing. The home team continued their attacks till the 18th minute when they finally scored through
Tomas Plekanec to level the scores.
The period ended with the scores level on 1-1 with Atlanta Thrashers making 5 goal attempts while Montreal Canadiens made 16 goal attempts.
The second period saw Atlanta Thrashers getting out of the blocks once again. Again, the away side took advantage of this with Evander Kane bagging a goal for the Thrashers in the 6th minute to put them into the lead once again.
The second period saw goal attempts flying from everywhere and from both teams. Montreal was the next team to benefit from this. They scored through P.K Subban’s powerful strike in the 11th minute that levelled the scores.
However, the away side was definitely stronger with the plays they developed. Hence, they scored through Andrew Ladd in the final minute of the period to take the lead once again. The period ended with Atlanta Thrashers leading 2-1. During the course of
the period, Atlanta made 14 goal attempts while Montreal Canadiens made 17 goal attempts.
The final period was totally dominated by Montreal in defence as well as offence. Coupled with this was the most important thing that they scored in the 16th minute to level the scores with Brain Gionta from a powerful strike.
With the scores level on 3-3 the match went into overtime where Atlanta scored through Dustin Byfuglien in the 4th minute to win the match 4-3. Dustin Byfuglien’s crucial goal also earned him the star selection of the match honour.
