NHL Latest – Atlanta Thrashers win 3-2 against Florida Panthers despite the away disadvantage
Wednesday, 5th January 2010 saw Florida Panthers play host to the Atlanta Thrashers. This was the 593rd game of the regular season with Atlanta Thrashers playing 43rd game while Florida Panthers played the 38th
game of their campaign. The match was played at the Bank Atlantic Centre with around 12,000 fans coming to visit the match. Florida Panthers managed to score and cut the lead to one goal with a goal in the final period. However, they failed to convert more
chances into goal which resulted in Atlanta Thrashers winning the match 3-2. Rich Peverley was named the star selection of the match as he scored 2 goals.
Both teams made a great start to the match firing shots on the opposing regularly and came up with displayed excellent passing. Not only this, the puck was seen going up and down the pitch every now and then.
It took some to coming but Atlanta finally managed to score through Niclas Bergfors from a brilliant strike in the 13th minute to take the lead. The attacks continued from both sides and Florida Panthers successfully scored through Stephen Weiss
in the 15th minute to level the scores.
The final period looked as if the score would remain same but Atlanta scored to silence the crowd scoring through Rich Peverley’s backhand shot. The period ended with Atlanta Thrashers leading 2-1. During the period, Atlanta made 14 goal attempts while Florida
made 16 goal attempts.
The second period was more of a defence dominated game. The start was shaky and taking advantage of this, Atlanta scored through Rich Peverley once again in the 7th minute. After this both the teams defence came out strong and didn’t allow any
attacks to develop. Both teams were restricted to long range shooting only.
The period ended with Atlanta Thrashers leading 3-1 with Atlanta making 8 goal attempts while Florida made 5 goal attempts.
The final period saw both teams come out with an attacking mentality. Resultantly, both teams came across several scoring chances but none were converted into goals early on. However, Florida Panthers managed score through Chriss Higgins in the 13th
minute to cut the lead to one goal.
Despite more than a dozen shots, Florida Panthers failed to score and the period and match ended with Atlanta Thrashers winning 3-2.
