NHL Latest – Buffalo Sabres win 2-1 against the Phoenix Coyotes in a hard fought battle in overtime
Phoenix Coyotes playing host to the Buffalo Sabres was another one of the eagerly awaited encounters of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series. The match was played at the Jobing.com Arena, home of the Coyotes. Both teams played the 41st game
of their respective campaign and this was the 619th game of the season. There were around 14,000 fans that came to witness the match. Ryan Miller, goalie of the Buffalo Sabres with his 33 saves was the star selection of the match. The match was
very tight throughout and was decided in overtime from where Buffalo Sabres emerged as 2-1 winners of the match.
Phoenix Coyotes with the backing of the home crowd was able to come up with strong attacks early on and took on the Buffalo Sabres defence. It took the away team some time to settle but after they got into the flow of the game it was all about the Sabres.
On the attacks Buffalo Sabres came up with shots after shots and when on the defence, Phoenix Coyotes was given no space as the players closed them down. There were many scoring opportunities for the Buffalo Sabres but they failed to take advantage and the
period ended goalless with Sabres making 13 goal attempts while Coyotes made 6 goal attempts.
Buffalo Sabres continued with the domination into the second period. Their passing and play making got better and better and they successfully scored through Jordan Leopold from a powerful strike to get into the lead in the 7th minute.
The away team continued to attack which left open spaces at the back. A mistake upfront cost Buffalo Sabres the lead as Phoenix Coyotes managed to level the scores with a goal from Scottie Upshall in the 13th minute.
After the goal, Phoenix Coyotes totally dominated the game and made shots after shots but they couldn’t score as the period ended with the scores level on 1-1. During the 20 minutes of play Buffalo Sabres made 7 goal attempts while Phoenix Coyotes made 18
goal attempts.
The final period of the match was evenly matched by both sides as they made goal attempts regularly and displayed decent passing but unfortunately no goals were scored in the final period. Both teams made 8 goal attempts each in the period as the regulation
time ended with the scores level on 1-1.
The match went into overtime where Drew Stafford scored in the 4th minute for the Buffalo Sabres as they won the match 2-1.
