NHL Latest – Columbus Blue Jackets win 3-1 against the Calgary Flames
The Columbus Blue Jackets snapped a four game losing streak on Tuesday night when they beat the Calgary Flames 3-1, to get their season back on track. Goalkeeper Mathieu Garon was one of the key performers for Columbus, as he made 29 saves to ensure his
team held on for the win.
The Blue Jackets dominated the game throughout, and kept possession of the puck for long periods of time. They were in no hurry to attack and simply forced the opposing team into making mistakes. The home team couldn’t take an early lead after wasting a
number of clear chances.
However their determination paid off, when Columbus Blue Jackets successfully scored in the sixth minute to take the lead of the match. Jakub Voracek scored the goal from a well placed flick shot. Both teams had several more opportunities to score, but unfortunately
no goals were scored during the rest of the period.
The period ended with the Columbus Blue Jackets leading 1-0. Columbus had 12 goal attempts, while the Calgary Flames made nine goal attempts.
The second period was similar to the first one, as both teams persistently tried to score with some smooth attacking moves. The home team’s perseverance paid off as they doubled their lead in the 12th minute through Jared Boll’s well placed flick shot. The
away side tried to stay within touching distance of the Blue Jackets, and they managed to reduce the deficit in the 17th minute through Olli Jokinen’s powerful strike.
Even though the Calgary Flames managed to score, the period was dominated by the Columbus Blue Jackets as they didn’t let the Flames settle into the game after the restart. No further goals were scored in the second period, which ended with the Columbus
Blue Jackets leading 2-1. During the course of the period the Blue Jackets made 17 goal attempts compared to the Calgary Flames 11.
The final 20 minutes of play saw the Calgary Flames start off strongly, and it looked as if they would level the game. However the Flames wasted a number of good chances, which allowed the home side to get back into the game. After sustaining the wave of
pressure from the Flames, the Blue Jackets grew stronger and scored in the final period to clinch the victory. The goal was scored by Rostislav Klesla to give Columbus a 3-1 win.
