NHL Latest – League leaders Detroit Red Wings stunned by the second to bottom league team New York Islanders winning 4-3 in after overtime
League leaders Detroit Red Wings hosted the New York Islanders this Friday at the Joe Louis Arena in front of 20,000 fans. This was the 560th game of the regular season which was played this Friday. The match was predicted to be won by the Detroit
Red Wings as the New York Islanders second to bottom in the league.
At the end of the first period, Detroit was trailing 1-2 but they scored in each of the period to level the scores at the end of the regulation time and the match went into overtime during which New York Islanders score to seal the match 4-3.
Detroit being the league leaders facing the bottom team was oozing with confidence. But it was not just this; they did have a very strong front line and midfield that regularly resulted in them coming across scoring opportunities.
The home team took long but scored through Johan Franzen from powerful strike to take the lead. Detroit continued to attack but New York Islanders caught them on a counter attack in the 14th minute to score and level the scores. The goal was scored
by Matt Moulson which was followed by another goal in the John Tavares backhand shot in the final minute which put the Islanders in the lead.
The score at the end of the period was 2-1 in favour of the New York Islanders as they made 4 goal attempts while Detroit made 12 goal attempts.
The start to the second period was no different from the first one with Detroit dominating the proceedings early on. However, this time it was New York Islanders who scored in the 16th minute through Jesse Joensuu’s simple tip in.
Detroit worked hard in the period and managed to score in the final period to cut the lead to one goal. The goal was scored by Valtteri Filppula through a decent strike. The period ended with this as the Islanders led 3-2.
During the final period there was nothing much to talk about except that the defence was very good for both the teams but a tiny mistake at the back by the Islanders resulted in Detroit scoring through Tomas Tatar to level the scores.
The regulation time ended with the scores level on 3-3 therefore the match went into overtime during which PA Parenteau scored for Islanders and they registered a remarkable 4-3 win against Detroit.
