NHL Latest – New York Islanders win 2-1 against the Pittsburgh Penguins after a very tough encounter in shootout

The second game of the Wednesday was hosted by the New York Islanders as they were up against the Pittsburgh Penguins. This was the 546th game of the regular season which was played at the Nassau Coliseum. This was one of the totally defence dominated
game which was won by the New York Islanders 2-1 after shootout. The goal keeper of the Islanders Rick DiPietro formed the heart of the defence making 37 saves.
Both teams made a great start to the match. There was a mixture of defence and offence but with the passage of time the shots on goal started to increase. Consequently, the teams shifted to defensive mode.
Though there were chances for both teams to score even after this but they were difficult and rare. The home almost scored in the 16th minute to take the lead through Josh Bailey but the shot went just wide. However, the period ended with the
scores deadlocked at 0-0 at the end of the period. The 20 minutes of play saw the New York Islanders making 10 goal attempts while the Pittsburgh Penguins made 12 goal attempts.
The 2nd period started in spectacular fashion for the home team. The very first move of the period saw the New York Islanders scoring through Josh Bailey to take the lead. The goal was a result of a brilliant flick shot that went through the legs
of the goal keeper.
The home team continued to pile pressure throughout the period but couldn’t score any further goals. Ono the other hand, Pittsburgh Penguins was aware of the fact that if they wanted any chance to win they had to score as soon as possible.
This resulted in away side become more active offensively. The determination and hard work scoring in the 17th minute to level the scores with the goal scored by Chris Conner from a quick fired that caught the goal keeper surprise.
The period saw a few more goal attempts by both teams but the scores were level at 1-1 at the end of the period. During the course of the period New York Islanders made 7 goal attempts while the Pittsburgh Penguins came up with 12 goal attempts.
The final period was a reflection of the first period that saw the teams maintaining a very tight defence. Both the teams waited for chances to come their way which happened rarely. Though the away side made 9 goal attempts and the Islanders made 8 goal
attempts but the period ended goalless.
The scores at the end of the regulation time was 1-1 and the match went into overtime. During the overtime no goals were scored so the match had to be decided in shootout. PA Parenteau’s goal in the shootout proved to be the difference as the home team won
2-1 at the end.
