NHL Latest News – Florida Panthers win 4-3 against the Washington Capitals in overtime
Florida Panthers hosted the 638th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series as they were up against the Washington Capitals. The match was played this Tuesday at the Bank Atlantic Centre with around 15,000 fans coming to witness the match.
This was the 43rd game of the season for the Washington Capitals while the Florida Panthers played the 41st game of the season. The match was very tight and hard fought as expected which saw the Florida Panthers eventually win the match
4-3 after overtime. Dennis Wideman was named the star selection of the match for his match winning goal and an assist.
Washington Capitals was definitely quick out of the block and made goal attempts but this was short lived. During the time span that they dominated the game, they had goal scoring chances but failed to convert them into goals.
On the other hand, Florida Panthers grew in confidence with the passage of time and with the constant domination in the game scored through Mike Santorelli from a simple tip in shot. After scoring the goal, Florida Panthers continued to dominate the game
and in doing so came across further scoring chances.
The home team with the confidence and backing of the home crowd was able to double the lead with another goal in the 13th minute scored by Marty Reasoner from another brilliant tip in shot. There were several more goal attempts made by the Florida
Panthers but no further goals were scored as Panthers led 2-0 going into the break. During the course of the period, Florida Panthers made 20 goal attempts while Washington Capitals made 7 goal attempts.
It looked that the Panthers would dominate the second period as they successfully scored in the 7th minute through David Booth from a spectacular backhand shot. However, Washington Capitals managed to shift momentum into their favour and with
some brilliant pieces of play opened their account through Marcus Johansson’s flick shot in the 11th minute.
A few minutes later, Washington Capitals successfully cut the lead to just one goal scoring through Mike Knuble from a superbly placed flick shot. The Washington Capitals, like the Panthers made a flurry of goal attempts as the period ended but without any
success. The period ended with the Florida Panthers leading 3-2. During the 20 minutes of play, Panthers made 10 goal attempts while Washington Capitals made 18 goal attempts.
The final period was very tight which saw both teams come out in search of goals but no overdoing. Washington Capitals scored in the 8th minute from Marcus Johansson’s tip in shot to level the scores. With both teams making a few more goal attempts
with the period and regulation time ending proved unsuccessful as no goals were scored.
The regulation time ended with the scores level on 3-3 and the match went into overtime as a result. During overtime, Dennis Wideman scored for the Washington Capitals in the 3rd minute to win the match 4-3 for the Capitals.
