NHL Legend Joe Sakic pots Hole-in-One at American Century Celebrity Golf Championship wins $1million
Former National Hockey League (NHL) legend and Colorado Avalanche centre player, Joe Sakic, potted a hole-in-one shot at the annual American Century Celebrity Golf Championship on Sunday, winning $1million, at the Lake Tahoe Resort in Stateline, Nevada,
United States.
The annual event which takes place for Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong Foundation for cancer research is where many celebrities are called and participate together for charity.
The $1million won by Joe Sakic for his hole-in-one shot will be split in half, of which $500,000 will be given to the charity and the other half Sakic will take for himself.
A two-time Stanley Cup champion, Joe Sakic plays golf as a hobby, but according to him, he has never hit a hole-in-one before, which makes this one even more special being it his first.
"That's a shot you never imagine hitting", said Sakic. "I've never even been close before".
The winner of the tournament already is awarded $1million, but whoever can make such a shot gets the same amount as a bonus.
The money is sponsored by American Century in partnership with the Kansas City-based investment company.
The three-day long event was very spectacular which not only gives meaning to a cause, but also allows for interaction with some of the best at what they do.
"I'm not used to this. I'm just rattled all the time," he said about the 54-hole golf tourney that draws a field of past and present sports stars and entertainers.
Jack Wagner was declared the winner in the end for his performance throughout the event. Hockey legend, Mario Lemieux, also participated in the event in 1998 and was declared the winner.
The 42-year-old former NHL Most Valuable Player (MVP) might still not believe it went in at that moment, but the feeling is still unimaginable for him.
"Trent (Dilfer) told me it went in, but I didn't believe him at first. I never imagined this. This is just great. I feel very fortunate to come to this tournament. For three days everyone here makes us feel like pros", Sakic said.
Having played 1,378 NHL games and registering a total of 1,641 points, 625 goals and 1,016 assists, throughout his career, Joe Sakic might just have found something he likes other than  hockey.
