NHL Match Recap: Anaheim Ducks 3-2 defeat Calgary Flames for 12th straight time
Corey Perry scored the decisive goal for the 7th time in his career, Jonas Hiller made 37 saves as Anaheim Ducks took a 3-2 victory over Calgary Flames at the Honda Centre on Friday night.
“The good part is we won tonight. The bad part is we had a two-goal lead and we gave it up again. It shouldn’t have happened,” Hiller said. “The problem is we start thinking too much about it, instead of just playing. We’re thinking about what could happen.
It’s a mental game. We have to do better in the third.”
Goaltender Henrik Karlsson made 23 of 25 saves for the Flames, who have dropped two in a row.
Defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky's tally in the first period and Dan Sexton's score in the second period had the Anaheim out to a 2-0 lead at 16:29 of the second. But Flames pulled even in the 3rd period, getting on the board with a power play goal. Visnovsky
forwarded the shot to David Moss in the slot and beated Hiller with 6:35 to play. Hiller faced 14 shots in the 3rd period.
Olli Jokinen got the puck in the right circle and beat Hiller with a wrist shot to the stick side at 6:58.
"We think that if we play this way we will win a lot more than we are going to lose," Jokinen said. "We just have to make sure we bring this for our next game."
Ducks got a big chance at 2:37 of overtime when Calgary’s forward Brendan Morrison was sent off for hooking Luca Sbisa, but could not take advantage of it and finished 0 for 5 with the man advantage. However, Karlsson defended; making 3 saves in 5 minutes
to ensure the game went to a shootout.
Flames thwarted on their first 5 power plays. Calgary got the man advantage again with 14:37 remaining after Saku Koivu was sent off for hooking Niklas Hagman and Jokinen beat Hiller to the stick side with a wrist shot from the right circle with 25 seconds
left on the penalty.
Calgary tied it with 5:35 remaining in regulation when Moss got himself in position in the low slot and redirected Mark Giordano’s wrist shot for his third goal of the season.
Anaheim throttled Calgary with an aggressive fore-check during the final 2 minutes of regulation, leading play in the Calgary zone with no success as Calgary’s Henrik Karlsson stood his ground.
Ryan Getzlaf scored in the tiebreaker for Ducks. He began the shootout with a goal, as he got Karlsson to close up before sliding the puck beneath the net minder. Alex Tanguay countered with a score for Calgary. Hiller committed early and lay out, and Tanguay
shifted to the left before guiding the puck past the goaltender's leg.
