NHL Player Profiles for the 2011-2012 Season: Calgary Flames Jarome Iginla
Jarome Iginla has been the face of the Calgary Flames for quite a while now, for 15 seasons to be exact. The 34-year-old veteran right winger has seen good days with the team along with many bad ones as well, but the question remains, will Iginla ever see
a Stanley Cup championship?
It was during the 2003-2004 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season that Calgary had one of its best performances till date. After potting 73 points (41 goals, 32 assists) in 81 games played, Iginla eventually led his team to a Stanley Cup Finals appearance
against the Tampa Bay Lightning, which they lost in a close seven game series.
In 26 games during the 2004 NHL Playoffs, Iginla led his team with 22 points (13 goals, 9 assists) and had the entire city of Calgary on its feet during game seven, even though it was taking place across the United States in Tampa, Florida.
Entering the 2011-2012 season, Iginla is nearing his final years as a player as he continues to age and being the teams’ captain for multiple years, fans are expecting the club to bring home a championship some time soon.
With their performance in the season thus far, Iginla has now showed off what he truly is capable of and having won only two of the seven total matchups up until now, it is a very disappointing moment for followers of the Calgary Flames.
At the moment, Calgary sits at number 14 in the Western Conference, just above the struggling Columbus Blue Jackets. The Flames certainly have the capacity to reach new heights and bring home the cup but it is in the end a team effort that will allow them
to get there.
In total, Iginla boasts one of the best record in the league and certainly the best in the Calgary franchise with 1,113 games played in which 1,009 points (486 goals, 523 assists) have been scored.
There is not any doubt about Iginla’s capability as a player, but there is hesitation from his side from being the best he can be.
Whether it is now or later on in the season, Calgary is waiting for a change and they want it to have sooner than later. Being the captain, Jarome Iginla must carry the weight on his shoulders and take his team where they want to go.
