NHL Preview Roundup: San Jose at Calgary, Ottawa at Phoenix, Edmonton at Vancouver
San Jose at Calgary (9.00 p.m. ET)
After comprehensively beating Edmonton Oilers (6-2) to get second straight victory, the Calgary Flames are set to host the regressing San Jose Sharks in a National Hockey League (NHL) game on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at the Scotiabank Saddledome, Calgary,
Alberta, Canada.
Flames have won five of their last 10 games and were fantastic against Edmonton Oilers. They dominated the opponents by scoring three goals in the first period and one in the second.
The Oilers scored two goals in the final, but the Flames also gave a stern reply by scoring two more to bring their total tally to six.
After playing 49 games, the Flames have 52 points and are ranked at 10th position in the NHL Western Conference.
Flames might get a chance to improve their record as San Jose Sharks are having a tough time recently.
Sharks are on a three-game losing streak and have lost four of their last five games. They are ranked third in the NHL Western Conference with 58 points, and that’s why the defeats are more tormenting for them.
Ottawa at Phoenix (9:00 p.m. ET)
Ottawa Senators might not get a better chance to snap their losing streak as they travel to face Phoenix Coyotes in a NHL game on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at the Jobing.com Arena, Glendale, Arizona.
The Senators have 60 points after playing 51 games and are ranked fifth in the NHL Eastern Conference.
However, they have lost their last two games against Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings, respectively.
They have a chance to improve their record as they take on the lowly Coyotes, who are on a three-game losing streak.
Coyotes lost their last game against Tampa Bay Lightning (4-3).
"You need to capitalise on opportunities, and we didn't do that," Phoenix's coach, Dave Tippett, said after the defeat.
"We had several good shots but many went over the net or up on the glass. We need to make sure these count.”
The Coyotes have 50 points after playing 49 games and are ranked 12th in the NHL Western Conference.
Edmonton at Vancouver (10.00 p.m. ET)
The second ranked team in the NHL Western Conference, Vancouver Canucks, will take on the feeble Edmonton Oilers in a NHL game on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at the Rogers Arena, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
The Canucks defeated San Jose Sharks (4-3) in their last game and can become the conference leaders, if they continue their current winning run.
They have 62 points after 48 games.
On the other hand, the Oilers have got only 40 points after playing 48 games.
"They have been reading about how crappy they are. I don't think they are that bad," Edmonton coach, Tom Renney, said of his players.
"They have been working hard all year. It just doesn't always turn into what any of us wanted."
They played the Sharks on Monday and defeated them in a shootout (2-1) to snap their three-game losing streak.
The Canucks have an edge over the Oilers, but a possibility of an upset cannot be ignored.
