NHL Recap: New Jersey Devils defeat the New York Rangers 1-0
The New Jersey Devils beat the New York Rangers 1-0 at the Prudential Centre on Friday. The Devils were looking for their sixth consecutive win, as they try to find a place in the top eight of the National Hockey League standings. The game was close, as
the Devils edged slightly ahead to beat the Rangers in the low scoring contest. The Devils’ winger Ilya Kovalchuk was named the Player of the Game for his winning goal.
The Rangers made a decent start to the game, as the attacked and made a few goal attempts. However, the Devils were able to respond to this with a few counter-attacks. The Devils’ offence got better, as their defence started to sparkle with the passage of
time.
The Devils, with their solid defence, restricted the Rangers to almost nothing during the course of the period. The Rangers managed to get in a few shots, but they were from long range and not goal threatening. The Devils continued to pile on the pressure,
as they had several scoring chances, but were unable to find the back of the net.
The period ended with the scores dead-locked on 0-0. During the course of the first period, the Rangers made 5 goal attempts, as the Devils managed 12.
The second period started with the Devils showing a stronger offence. The Devils worked hard in the middle and were rewarded for it with a goal in the 9th minute to get into the lead.
The goal was scored by Ilya Kovalchuk from a well placed flick-shot, after a sensational move by Anton Volchenkov to create the chance. The period saw the Devils exploding at the front and maintaining a superb backline, as they restricted the home side to
almost nothing.
Several chances came and went for the Devils, as the Rangers came up with a few shots in between. However, none of the shots found the back of the net and the period ended with the Devils leading 1-0. During the course of the period, the Devils made 10 goal
attempts, as the Rangers managed 5.
The final period of the game saw both teams concentrating on their defence. Though there were a few goal attempts in the period, as both goal-keepers did an excellent job to deny any goals. There were shots on goal from everywhere on ice, but none were converted
into any goals. The period and the game ended with both teams making six goal attempts in the final period as the Devils won the game 1-0.
The Devils barely managed to edge the Rangers for the victory. It will be interesting to see how the team carry their winning momentum forward.
