NHL Recap: Philadelphia Flyers beat the New York Rangers 4-2
The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the New York Rangers 4-2 in a hard fought game at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. A win for the Flyers would boost their chances to take the lead of National Hockey League standings. The Rangers played aggressively in the
first period, but the Flyers managed to over-power them in the end. Flyer’s centre Jeff Carter was named the Player of the Game for his equalizing goal in the first period and assist in the winning goal.
Both team made a great start to the game which saw them attacking and coming up with shots on goal. With some strong work in the middle and at the back, the Rangers were threatening the goal often.
The Rangers scored the opening goal in the period with Wojtek Wolski in the 13th minute from a brilliant flick-shot. The Flyers were put under a lot of pressure, but amazingly they were able to manage it, as they scored through a brilliant tip-in
shot by Jeff Carter in the 17th minute to level the scores.
The Rangers took the initiative of making goal attempts and had numerous goal scoring opportunities. None of the shots found the back of the net as the period ended with the scores level on 1-1. During the course of period the Flyers made 9 goal attempts,
as the Rangers managed 14.
The second period saw the Flyers coming up with a few strong attacks which saw them coming across numerous scoring chances. The Rangers also came up with a few strong shots during the period. Amazingly, two goals were scored in favour of the Flyers. The
first of the two goals was scored in the 13th minute during power-play by Claude Giroux, as the second was scored by Daniel Carcello from a superb back-hand shot in the 17th minute.
Both teams continued to pile shots on goal, but no further goals were scored as the period ended with the Flyers leading 3-1. During the period, the Flyers made 12 goal attempts while the Rangers managed 10.
The final 20 minutes of play were evenly contested by the two sides. The Rangers were very productive during the period, as they made 15 goal attempts compared to three by the Flyers.
The Rangers scored in the 6th minute through Derek Stephan to cut the lead to just one goal. The Flyers scored in the final minute of the period through Kris Versteeg to win the game 4-2 in the end.
The Flyers are only one win away from taking the lead in the NHL standings. It will be interesting to see how they carry their winning momentum forward.
