NHL Recap: Pittsburgh Penguins defeat Colorado Avalanche 3-2
The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in overtime at the Pepsi Centre on Wednesday. The Avalanche was desperate for a win, as they try to end their eight games losing streak. The Penguins were fighting for their chances at the top spot
in the National Hockey League Eastern Conference standings. The game went down to the wire, as the Penguins’ Tyler Kennedy scored the winning goal in over-time.
Both the teams made a great start to the game, as they made shots on goal and came up with some excellent passing. Regular attempts on goal were made right from the start of the proceedings, but the front-line was unable to capitalise from the chances they
got.
Though there were several easy goal scoring chances early on, neither teams was able to score any goals. The Penguins managed to score through Joe Vitale from a superb flick shot to get into the lead. The period saw both teams making a few more goal attempts
but no further goals were scored. The Penguins led 1-0 at the end of the period. During the course of the period, the Penguins made 10 goal attempts while the Avalanche managed 11 goal attempts.
The second period continued on the same road, but this time an early goal was scored. It took four minutes for Chris Stewart to level things for the Avalanche. The game picked up pace with the passage of time and much to delight of the fans, as it was the
home team that had chances coming their way.
The Avalanche scored through Cameron Gaunce from a quick fired shot in the 15th
minute to get into the lead. The crowd became wild, but unfortunately the lead did not last long as the Penguins scored during the very next play through Jordan Staal to level the scores.
The period saw both teams coming up with several more goal attempts but no further goals were scored. The period ended with the scores level on 2-2 with the Penguins making 13 goal attempts, with the Avalanche managing 12.
The final period saw both teams making a slow start. There were shots on goal by both teams but they were unable to find the back of the net. The period ended with no goals scored during the final 20 minutes of play, with the scores level on 2-2. During
the course of the period, the Penguins made 11 goal attempts, with the Avalanche managing 7 attempts.
The game went into over-time, as the Penguins scored through Tyler Kennedy from a powerful strike to win the game 3-2. Kennedy was named the star selection of the game, as his goal was the game winner. The game was exciting for the fans, as they had the
added treat of an exhilarating over-time session. It will be interesting to see how the Penguins carry their winning momentum forward.
