Continued from part II...
New York Islanders outclass Carolina Hurricanes, 5-2
New York Islanders ended the month on a positive note after outclassing Carolina Hurricanes, 5-2, in a National Hockey League (NHL) game at the RBC Center, Raleigh, North Carolina.
John Tavares was the star of the night as he provided the go-ahead goal to Islanders in the final period after Carolina had just overcome a two-goal deficit.
Tavares also scored a goal within the final minute to further intense the damage.
"I try to approach each game with the same mindset and same work ethic," Tavares said.
He added that:
"Obviously, you get to know the teams and who you're playing against, but I just try to go off my hard work. My line-mates have been phenomenal."
Islanders scored a goal each in the first two periods while Panthers struggled to maintain possession.
At 5:49 in the first period, P.A. Parenteau scored a power-play goal and Matt Moulson doubled the lead at 16:19, in the second, by scoring another power-play goal.
However, Panthers struck back hard in the final to level the score.
At 3:15, Brandon Sutter scored Hurricanes’ first goal. At 6:55, Tim Brent scored a power-play goal to equalise the score.
After two low scoring periods, two goals in quick succession cheered up the crowd that saw three more goals within the next 13 minutes.
Tavares scored at 7:36 to get ahead and the lead was doubled by Kyle Okposo at 18:37. Tavares hit the final nail in the coffin at 19:37 to seal the victory.
Buffalo Sabres dominate Montreal Canadiens, 3-1
After outclassing the impressive Detroit Red Wings (7-2) in the last game, Montreal Candaiens was expected to display a much better performance against Buffalo Sabres, which easily defeated Montreal, 3-1, at the Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Although Canadiens got a lead early in the first period, the rest of the game almost belonged to Sabres.
Montreal's coach, Randy Cunneyworth, also recalled his team’s performance against Red Wings and regretted that the players failed to repeat the heroics.
He said:
“Obviously simple plays like throwing pucks through the crease, things we did the night before, we didn't do tonight. Those are the simple things that you have to do.”
Max Pacioretty scored at 4:09 in the first period.
He beat the defenseman, Matt Ellis, and struck a shot, which was stopped by goalie, Ryan Miller. However, the puck rebounded off the goalie and Pacioretty did not miss the second chance.
Ville Leino provided the equaliser at 4:01 in the second period.
Paul Gaustad and Patrick Kaleta scored a goal each in the final period to give his team a two-goal advantage.
After playing 50 games apiece, both Sabres and Canadiens have 47 points each.
