Two third period goals lift Detroit Red Wings over lowly Calgary Flames
The Detroit Red Wings returned from the All-Star weekend and end January on a high note as they beat the lowly Calgary Flames, 3-1.
Red Wings are top of the Western Conference and consolidated that position with an efficient performance on the road.
Taking a first period lead as Cory Emmerton scored five minutes into the game, Red Wings looked to be going for an easy win on the road.
However, they saw their lead pegged back in the second period as Calgary fought back.
Mike Cammalleri scored on the power play two minutes into the second period to tie the score and set the game up for an interesting finale.
In the third period the game could have gone to both sides with Calgary outshooting the Western Conference table toppers 11-10 but Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard kept the Flames out and Detroit’s much better offence ticked to score two quick goals in
the final ten minutes.
Jiri Hudler made it 2-1 at 11:29 before Drew Miller put the game beyond doubt at 15:58 with Detroit’s third.
"It's a good road win," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "Any time after the All-Star break when you have to travel like we did and with the altitude, you know it's going to be a grind. I thought we stuck with it."
The Flames remain 11th in the Western Conference with a 23-22-6 record.
Hat trick hero Andrew Cogliano leads Ducks to 4-1 win over Phoenix Coyotes
One thing NHL teams have learnt this season is never to underestimate the Anaheim Ducks. Phoenix Coyotes experienced that fact to the full as a resurgent Ducks side pounded them to submission at home ice.
The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead in the first period with Ray Whitney putting the hosts ahead at 7:39.
The Ducks had lost their last game before the All-Star weekend to the Dallas Stars by a 1-0 margin which brought an end to a wonderful five game winning streak.
Yet, Anaheim was not bogged down by that fact and Andrew Cogliano sparked the comeback with the Ducks outshooting Coyotes 11-10.
The forward tied the score at 6:59 beating Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith.
Cogliano got his second four minutes later to make it 2-1 and after three minutes completed his hat trick as the Ducks got a two goal lead over the Coyotes.
The Coyotes tried hard to counter at the other end but could not get past Jonas Hiller who made 25 saves during the game.
Teemu Selanne scored Anaheim’s fourth on the power play in the final minute of the match to complete a memorable victory for Anaheim.
