NHL Recap Roundup (Part VI)
Continued from part V
Edmonton Oilers win 3-2 in thriller over Colorado Avalanche
The Colorado Avalanche missed a great opportunity to move into the playoff spot after losing out to the Oilers.
Minnesota Wild which occupies the final playoff spot is only one point ahead of Colorado and their loss to the Nashville Predators provided the perfect opportunity for Avalanche to move up yet they came up short against one of the worst teams in the NHL.
Goaltender Devan Dubnyk made 31 saves to maintain the Oilers small advantage and his heroics allowed the Canadian side to win the closely fought game.
Jordan Eberle gave Edmonton the lead five minutes into the first period and Eric Belanger’s late power play goal doubled the Oilers advantage.
Peter Mueller’s goal in the second period broke the Avalanche’s duck but they could not score any more goals to take advantage of their momentum.
Taylor Hall’s third period goal against the run of play made it 3-1 for Edmonton.
Colorado tried their best outshooting Edmonton 15-4 in the period but only had Gabriel Landeskog’s goal at 10:14 to show for it.
Vancouver Canucks hold out Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in OT win
The Vancouver Canucks have made it a habit over their last three games to win by the smallest of margins.
They just managed to edge out San Jose Sharks 4-3 last Saturday while following it up with a 3-2 shootout victory over Edmonton Oilers, and now after the All-Star weekend that trend continued.
Ryan Kesler gave the Canucks a first period lead at 7:58 but it proved to be short-lived as the Blackhawks equalised three minutes later through Jamal Mayers fourth goal of the season.
The scores remained tied in the second period with Cory Schneider saving all 15 Blackhawk shots at his net.
The Canucks goaltender would have a great day and his form kept Vancouver in the game as he made a mammoth 37 saves in the whole 60 minutes.
Viktor Stalberg gave Chicago a 2-1 lead early in the third period but it would take just three minutes for the Canucks to equalise as Cody Hodgson beat goaltender Corey Crawford from close range to tie the game.
The match went to overtime and the Canucks All-Star brother duo Henrik and Daniel Sedin combined to lift the Canadians to victory.
San Jose Sharks outclass poor Columbus Blue Jackets in 6-0 win
The Columbus Blue Jackets are the worst team in the NHL and any fan who watched their pounding at the hands of San Jose Sharks could not have helped but feel a bit sorry for them.
Two goals in each period were scored by San Jose as they simply brushed aside the Blue Jackets who for once gave some sort of fight as they troubled Sharks goaltender Antti Niemi with 30-shots.
Niemi completed his fourth shutout of the season and twice in two games as the Sharks comprehensively beat down the league’s punching bags.
Patrick Marleau gave Sharks the lead at 7:53 in the first period while Captain Joe Thornton doubled the advantage two minutes later.
Joe Pavelski’s power play goal in the second period made it 3-0, and Jamie McGinn made it 4-0 at 16:55.
McGinn turned provider in the third period as he notched up an assist for Michal Handzus fourth goal of the season and the Sharks fifth while Thornton rounded it up with the final goal late in the period.
The Sharks rise to third in the Western Conference with their second straight win.
