NHL Recap: St. Louis Blues top Anaheim Ducks, 9-3
T.J. Oshie and Chris Stewart each lit the lamp twice to help St. Louis Blues top Anaheim Ducks, 9-3, at Scottrade Centre on Saturday night.
"It was a perfect start," Stewart said. "By the time I landed, I had three or four text messages from the boys and it was very comforting. It was an easy adjustment."
The 23-year-old Stewart made a two-goal debut in his last 14 contests with Avalanche after returning from a broken hand. He has recorded eight goals and 15 points in only nine career games against St. Louis. Andy McDonald also added a goal in
the win.
"Yeah, a couple of the boys let me know before the game," Stewart said. "They were calling me the Blues killer, so I found that kind of funny."
David Backes and Alexander Steen each scored a goal and two assists for St. Louis, which has won three consecutive games. Goalie Ty Conklin made 3 saves of 5 shots before being pulled for Ben Bishop, who stopped 20-of-21 shots.
Teemu Selanne, Jarkko Ruutu and Ryan Getzlaf each notched a goal for Anaheim, which has lost three games in a row since a 4-game winning streak.
Curtis McElhinney made 4 saves of 11 shots before being replaced by Timo Pielmeier, who saved 5-of-12 shots.
"We're just not playing our calibre of hockey. This is another game where we just weren't ready to play...It's frustrating." Getzlaf said.
Ducks got on the board at 2:20 mark into the opening stanza when Ruutu scored on a tip-in. In the seventh minute, Selanne blasted a wrist shot from the right circle to give Anaheim a 2-0 lead. St. Louis tied the game with a pair of goals in a
span of only 7 seconds. At 10:24 mark into the first period, Oshie used a backhander to equalize the game at 2-2 after McDonald deflected his shot into the back of net.
With less than six minutes remaining, Carlo Colaiacovo scored a goal on the power play to give Blues a 3-2 lead. But Getzlaf tallied a goal with less than four minutes left to tie it at 3-3.
St. Louis went ahead for good with less than two minutes left in the first period on McDonald’s tip-in. Blues had four more goals in the middle stanza to turn the contest into a rout. At 7:50 mark into the second period, Backes got the first,
Jamming home a rebound to give Blues a 5-3 edge.
After Stewart’s two power play goals, Oshie blasted a snap shot at 12:54 mark into the third stanza to give Blues an 8-3 cushion.
In the eighth minute of the final stanza, Steen capped the scoring with a short-handed goal.
