NHL Recap: Washington Capitals defeat the Anaheim Ducks 7-6
The Washington Capitals beat the Anaheim Ducks 7-6 in a hard fought contest at the Honda Centre on Wednesday. The Capitals, having lost their last three games, were looking to end the slide, as the Ducks were looking for a much needed victory with the National
Hockey League Western Conference standings still very close. Alexander Semin of the Capitals, managed a brilliant hat-trick to carry the team.
Both teams exploded right from the start, as chances were opening up on both sides. The early chances were difficult, but the Ducks were able to score through a splendid back-hand shot by Ryan Getzlaf during the power-play to take the lead.
The teams continued to pile pressure offensively, but it was not until the 11th minute when the Capitals scored through Captain Alex Ovechkin to level the scores. The Capitals continued with some dominating play and scored once again through Brooks
Laich in the 17th minute to get into the lead. The lead did not last long, as the Ducks score two goals in succession to get back into the game as the period ended.
The first goal was scored by Teemu Selanne in the 19th minute while the second goal was scored by Toni Lydman in the final minute respectively. The Ducks led 3-2 at the end of the period as they made 9 goal attempts in the period with the Capitals
managing 10 goal attempts.
The second period continued on the same road for both sides, as they continuously knocked on the door looking for goals. The home team emerged stronger of the two teams at the start and scored in the 7th minute to double their lead with Corey
Perry scoring the goal.
The Capitals bounced back scoring two goals in 8th and 10th minutes to level the scores. The goals were scored by David Steckel from a tip in shot and Alexander Semin respectively.
It looked as if both teams wanted to attack and nothing else. As a result, the Ducks scored through Lubomir Visnovsky from a decent strike to get back into the lead. The period ended with the Ducks leading 5-4. During the period, the Ducks made 7 goal attempts
while the Capitals managed 11 goal attempts.
The final period started off with the Capitals scoring in the very first minute through Mike Knuble to level the scores. The Ducks scored through Bobby Ryan in the 6th minute to get back into the lead.
Unfortunately, it was not the Ducks night, as the Capitals scored in the 12th minute through Alexander Semin to level the scores once again. The away-side scored once again through Alexander Semin in the final stages to complete his hat-trick
and win the game for the Capitals.
This high scoring game saw some brilliant plays and exciting offensive strategies by both teams. With the 2010-11 NHL regular season coming to a close, it will exciting to see how the teams pick up their performances and go for the elusive play-off spots.
