NHL Transfer News: Mike Modano moves to Detroit Red Wings
Just a week ago, it was announced that Mike Modano was not going to be offered a contract for the next (2010-2011) season by the Dallas Stars. Reports suggested that either the Detroit Red Wings or Minnesota Wild would come up with an offer. The rumours and speculations all came true when the Red Wings pulled off the deal and signed the veteran for a one-year contract worth 1.25 million dollars.
Modano, one of the veterans of the game, and one who still has something to offer to the NHL, signed a two year deal with the Red Wings. Modano is one of the most respected people in the league and is also known for his colourful behaviour on and off the pitch.
Modano, according to some reports, signed the deal because he believes that the Detroit team has a lot of potential. Modano believes that the Wings can win yet another Stanley Cup and with the huge fan base they have, it would surely benefit him.
This veteran still has the capability to beat the best on the pitch and the energy level that he provides makes one think of him as a 20 year old. The determination to win is the key to his success and in future will also help him, according to experts. This veteran player has a lot of talent and experience that enables him to play in any provided position and that too with the best of his abilities. Modano can surely provide the boost to the second power play unit while playing at the point position or along the half boards.
The arrival of Modano will give the Detroit Red Wings the benefit of extra experience and also leadership, qualities that could be vital on their way to glory. Although the Detroit team don’t lack experience, due to an already experienced locker room, the qualities he has, according to experts, are lacking in the team, and therefore, his presence will greatly help the Red Wings.
This extravagant player has vast experience, having played in over 1600 games in his 20 year career in the NHL. This is also one of the reasons that sometimes during a game, signs of wear and tear are observed in him. His health is one issue that would concern him and his Red Wings team but without a doubt, if fully fit, he will be one of the deadliest weapons the Wings would possess.
Modano’s arrival in the Red Wings’ team will be looked upon with concern by some younger players, like Darren Helm, whose contribution to the team will now be less than it could have been. This will also hinder their progress in their development into better players, according to experts.
The Detroit team has many fresh players like Helm but a fact about the Detroit team is that all the best players in the team are aged 30 and above.
Keeping this in mind, if one or two players leave Detroit Red Wings this season, Modano surely has the capabilities to fill their spots according to some legends of the game. However, the more pressing question (and cause for concern) would be that if players leave now, what will Detroit do in the coming future when Modano retires?
