NHL Update: Atlanta Thrashers clinch 2-1 win vs New York Islanders after overtime
The 294th game of 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere series was played at the Philips Arena, home of Atlanta Thrashers this Sunday. It saw the home team up against New York Islanders in front of 10,000 fans. Islanders played their 20th game
while Thrashers their 21st. Both battled hard with Thrashers edging out ahead in overtime to win the game 2-1.
The away team made a decent start, firing shots at the opposing goal every now and then. Thrashers responded but neither of the two teams was able to score. The 1st period came to an end with the score deadlocked at 0-0 as Islanders made 6 goal
attempts while Thrashers made 14.
Thrashers started the 2nd period with some crisp and pinpoint passing which saw the crowd applauding them often. The home team pressed on in search of a goal and came close to scoring one in the 10th minute only to be denied by the
opponent's goal keeper who made an excellent save.
The home team left lots of open spaces at the back when they attacked which were exploited by the Islanders. They were successful in scoring to break the deadlock in the final minutes of the period. The goal was scored by Michael Grabner through a spectacular
tip-in shot.
This was the only goal of 2nd period as both teams went into the break with the away team leading 1-0. During the period, Islanders made 15 goal attempts while Thrashers made 10 attempts.
The final period saw the home team come out determined to score. Both sides concentrated on their defences while also creating some decent goal scoring chances.
Thrashers levelled in the 3rd minute with the goal coming of Nik Antropov from a powerful strike. The final period also ended with the home team making 10 goal attempts while Islanders 8 goal attempts.
The match stretched to overtime which saw the home team scoring in the 2nd minute to clinch victory. This goal was scored by Dustin Byfuglien as the match ended 2-1 in favour of Atlanta Thrashers.
