NHL Update: Boston Bruins doubled up Ottawa Senators, 4-2
Brad Marchand lit the lamp twice, as Boston Bruins used a three-goal burst in the final period to take down Ottawa Senators, 4-2, at Scotiabank Place on Friday night.
"We're the best team in the third period in the league and we really wanted to use it to our advantage. We kept building as the game went on and we wanted another big third. These are big points for us and everyone brought it in the third."Marchand
said.
Nathan Horton and Dennis Seidenberg both also found the net for Boston, which has won two consecutive games.
Tuukka Rask stopped 32 shots for his third win in four starts, as Bruins extended their lead in the Northeast Division to four points (73-69).
Bobby Butler and Alex Kovalev each scored a goal for Ottawa, which has dropped two straight play-offs and 13 of its previous 14.
Robin Lehner lost his fourth consecutive decision after allowing all four goals on 33 shots.
Following a goalless opening frame, Ottawa got the scoring started for 1-0 lead nearly three minutes into the middle stanza. The goal came when Jason Spezza passed the puck to Butler, who ripped a wrist shot that sailed over goalie's shoulder.
"We were in it and we played pretty good. It's just tough to win a game when you miss opportunities."Spezza said.
Bruins countered to tie the game at 1-1 in the seventh minute of the first period, as Marchand fired a shot under the crossbar from the right circle.
"It's no secret to me," Milan Lucic said of Marchand's play. "He knows exactly what to do and he's got a great shot."
Horton staked Boston to a 2-1 lead just before the halfway point of the final session. It was the goal that probably should not have counted. It started when Milan Lucic rushed into the Senators zone a half-step ahead of David Krejci, who carried
the puck in the offensive zone and passed it to the left wing for Horton, who then jammed it home for his 15th goal of the year.
Seidenberg doubled up Boston’s advantage, 3-1, on a power-play with almost 4 ½ minutes to play in the game, then Marchand netted his second goal of the game only 32 seconds later to give the visitors a three-goal edge, 4-1.
Kovalev drew Senators within another goal to cut the deficit in half, 4-2, with 1 ½ minute left in the game, as he redirected Filip Kuba’s shot into the net.
Senators pulled Lehner in favour of an extra skater in the last minute, but they failed to come close to scoring.
