NHL Update: Buffalo Sabres beat Atlanta Thrashers, 4-1
Ryan Miller made 40 saves, as Buffalo Sabres held on for a 4-1 victory against Atlanta Thrashers, at HSBC Arena on Wednesday night.
Tyler Myers scored a goal and earned an assist, while Jason Pominville and Tyler Ennis each also lit the lamp for Buffalo, which halted a three-game losing streak. Paul Gaustad also added a goal in the winning effort.
"There were a lot of good things that came out of the win tonight. It was Mr. Terry Pegula's first win as an owner and out first win for the fans in a little while." said Myers.
Andrew Ladd was the lone scorer for Atlanta, which has lost eight of its previous nine contests. Ondrej Pavelec allowed all four goals on 39 shots.
"There were a key two minutes in the second period that lost it for us," said Pavelec. "We decided to take a shift off and they score two goals during that time."
Myers got Sabres on the board to give 1-0 lead nearly seven minutes into the opening stanza, as he ripped a clean wrist shot from the top of the right circle past Pavelec.
Atlanta pulled the game even at 1-1 on the power play just 5 ½ minutes into the middle session. It happened so when Ladd grabbed a loose puck at the edge of the crease near the left post and raised the disc over a sprawling Miller from a sharp
angle for his 22nd goal of the season.
Sabres, though, tallied twice in 30 seconds span later in the middle stanza to notch a two-goal advantage, 3-1.
The first goal came when due to a nice attempt by Gaustad, who charged into the Thrashers end down the right wing, cut to the middle and jammed his own rebound home for his ninth goal of the season.
Just few seconds later, Myers fired a shot on net from the right point, and Pominville tipped home the rebound at the right side.
“It was a good all-around effort,” Myers said. “We did exactly what we wanted to do in the third, getting that fourth goal. There were still moments where I thought we could have been better, but for the most part it was good.”
Ennis accounted the final scoring at 4-1 with his 13th goal of the season just two minutes into the final frame.
“Forty shots on the road, and we found a way to lose,” Atlanta Coach Craig Ramsay said. “We have five home games coming up. We need five wins.”
