Detroit Red Wings beat Colorado Avalanche 4-3 in their own backyard on Monday. The 533rd match of NHL season took place at the Pepsi Centre where nearly 18,000 fans witnessed had gathered to support their both teams.
Colorado Avalanche started the match on a high note right. They scored first and took the lead. The goal was scored by Matt Duchene from a well-placed flick shot.
Detroit Red Wings also put the pressure on the home side. As a result, they were able to level the scores in the sixth minute when Jiri Hudler’s flick shot went into the back of the net. The home team was able to respond to this and TJ Galiardi scored in
the very next minute to give them the lead.
The away side was able to come up with attacks too and a few minutes later, they were able to score in the 13th minute to level the scores once again. Though there were more scoring chances in the period for both sides but no further goals were
scored.
The period ended with the scores level on 2-2. During the course of the period, Colorado Avalanche made 16 goal attempts while the Detroit Red Wings made 9 attempts.
The second period was totally dominated by the home side with the frequent attacks they made. Some of the chances were so clear-cut, it was almost certain that they would score.
Unfortunately, the Colorado Avalanche were not able to capitalise from the chances and did not score any goals during the course of the 20 minutes of play. Detroit Red Wings also had the share of the chances but they too could not score during the period.
The scores were level on 2-2 at the end of the second period. During the course of the period, Red Wings made 9 goal attempts. The home side made 23 goal attempts but still did not score.
During the final period, it was not until the 15th minute when the Detroit Red Wings finally managed to score. The goal was scored by Nicklas Lidstrom from a decent strike.
The stage looked set for a Detroit Red Wings win but the Colorado Avalanche scored in the 18th minute to level the scores that took the match into overtime. The goal was scored by Matt Duchene who bagged his second for the night.
During the course of the overtime, Detroit Red Wings scored through Niklas Kronwall in the fourth minute from a very powerful strike. This resulted in the Detroit Red Wings winning the match 4-3.
Chris Osgood, goalie of the Red Wings was named the star selection of the match for his amazing 46 saves in the match.
