NHL Update – New Jersey Devils clinch 3-2 win against Philadelphia Flyers
The 61st match of NHL Pre-season saw New Jersey Devils host Philadelphia Flyers at Prudential Centre in the presence of more than 10,000 fans.
As soon as the first period started, New Jersey Devils came up with two early shots that barely missed the goal. However, it were the Philadelphia Flyers who struck the first blood by scoring in the second minute. Their goal was a result of Jeff Carter scoring
on the first goal attempt that the Flyers made.
In the next few minutes, both teams had their share of chances but none could be converted into goal. It was not until the ninth minute when a superb piece of play saw Devils level the score. The goal was scored by Adam Mair through a 24 feet tip-in while
rest of the period was relatively slow in terms of goal attempts.
The score at the end of first period was 1-1. Flyers dominated much of the play and managed to come up with 11 goal attempts out of which they scored once while Devils also scored once out of their 5 attempts. The New Jersey Devils’ Head Coach, John MacLean
said, “It was a great goal, great shot and everything was perfect.”
During the second period also, both teams worked hard and tried to break past the opposing defense but none of the attempts were successful as the defenses proved non-porous.
Although, most of the period was dominated by Devils but once again it was the opposing team that took advantage of the open space that was provided to them. The Flyers managed to score in the sixteenth minute through a 14 feet snap shot by Nikolai Zherdev.
This placed them in the lead with just four minutes left to play.
The final minutes of the period were again dominated by Devils as they came up with shots on regular basis. Some of their long range shots were destined to go into the goal, had it not been the goalkeeper to have stood in the way. Some goal attempts were
so powerfully struck that they barely missed the goal.
At the period’s end, Flyers piled up 9 shots out of which they scored only once while Devils had 13 shots but weren’t able to score any goal. Now, with the final period left to play the Philadelphia Flyers were confident that they would win the match.
But, the home team looked more determined to score in the third period. Their confidence and determination paid off as Devils managed to level the score in the fifteenth minute. This goal was a result of Travis Zajac’s 10 feet snap-in shot that delighted
the fans a lot.
With the extra hard work, Devils managed to score once again in the eighteenth minute to take the lead with 3-2 in their favor. The game ended on the same score with New Jersey Devils scoring twice out of their 10 goal attempts while Philadelphia Flyers
weren’t able to score even once out of their eight goal attempts.
