NHL Update: Philadelphia Flyers doubled up New York Rangers, 4-2
Brian Boucher stopped 37 shots, as Philadelphia Flyers continued their surge with a 4-2 win against New York Rangers, at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night.
Jeff Carter and Claude Giroux both had a goal and an assist for Philadelphia, which wrapped up its road trip with a 3-1-0 mark. Kris Versteeg and Daniel Carcillo both also found the net in the win.
"It's one of those things where you don't want to get complacent. We still need to win games and keep pushing ourselves. We want to get home-ice for the playoffs and that's our goal." said Boucher.
Wojtek Wolski and Derek Stepan each netted a goal, while Henrik Lundqvist turned away 20-of-23 shots for Rangers, who have dropped eight of their previous 10 games.
"I thought a number of players played really well, but it's about winning a hockey game and we just haven't been consistent enough here," said Rangers head coach John Tortorella. "We are going to ramp it up again tomorrow and start again."
Wolski got the scoring started to give Rangers a 1-0 lead with nearly seven minutes left in the opening stanza, scoring from his knees in the crease. Carter knotted the game at 1-1 just four minutes later, as he deflected a shot into the net
from the slot.
Philadelphia went on top, 2-1, on a power-play goal with a little over seven minutes left in the middle frame. The goal came when Carter ripped a shot on net, but it was denied by Lundqvist, then Carter backhanded the puck to Giroux, who knocked
it into the net with the net-minder down.
Carcillo staked Flyers to a two-goal edge, 3-1, with 3 ½ minutes left in the same period, as he whipped a backhander under the Lundqvist’s pads.
New York put tons of pressure in the final session, outshooting Flyers by a 15-3 margin.
Stepan pulled Rangers within a goal to make it 3-2 game just 5 ½ minutes into the period. It happened so when Dan Girardi blasted a shot that bounced off the end boards and went into the crease, where Stepan grabbed the puck and buried it home.
Versteeg restored Flyers two-goal edge, 4-2, with an empty netter in the last minute to wrap up Flyers’ fourth victory in as many meetings with New York this season.
"If you do not want to waste energy killing penalties, then you should exert it on different things. We kept our sticks to ourselves. We played physical and we did not overstep our boundaries - which is tough to do against Rangers," Philadelphia
captain Mike Richards said.
