NHL Update: Pittsburgh Penguins win 5 -1 against the Detroit Red Wings at home
The Detroit Red Wings were up against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday, the 22nd September which concluded in a one-sided encounter. The Penguins managed to outplay the Detroit Red Wings in front of their home crowd in the Mellon Arena.
Out of all the goal scorers, Sidney Crosby managed to come out on top. This splendid player managed to scare off the opposition thanks to the deadly playmaking abilities that he displayed during the game.
Though later on, Sidney could not carry on and was benched for the third period due to an injury that he sustained to his hip. Nevertheless, the Pittsburgh Penguins managed to come out on top after recording a 5-1 win.
Regarding the injury to Crosby, the Detroit Penguin Coach said, “It’s not a serious injury, not more than just a sore hip.”
Crosby will without a doubt be playing in the Penguins’ next preseason game against the Columbus after the player himself confirmed that it was nothing serious. This according to analysts is not an unusual injury as players still get into the flow of playing
after taking a break. They might just tweak or twist, get the blood running and build a certain comfort level before the season begins.
During the course of the match, the first period saw the Detroit Red Wings come up with 7 shots in total. None of the shots were converted into goals as they went into the break without a goal. On the contrary, the Pittsburgh Penguins dominated the proceedings
in the first period after they managed to come up with a total of 20 shots. However, the Penguins managed to convert three of the shots into goals. After the first period, the Penguins led 3-0.
The second period was much better for the Red Wings as they were much more confident in what they were doing. Due to this confidence and comfort level, they came up with 14 shots during the second period. However, they failed to take advantage that they
could have and came up with only one goal at the end of this period. After dominating the period, the Pittsburgh Penguins sat back and enjoyed the ball possession. At the end of the second period, the Penguins could only muster 7 shots but importantly, the
team scored twice.
The third period went by without a goal with the Red Wings coming up with 5 shots and the Penguins managing to come up with 10 shots. The Penguins though were in a good position but were looking to press on for another goal. At the end of the game, the Detroit
Red Wings managed to come up with a total of 26 attempts out of which only 1 was converted into a goal. On the contrary, the Penguins managed to pull off 5 goals out of the 37 shots they made.
This completed a dominating performance by the Pittsburgh Penguins that saw Mike Comrie score while Ryan Craig and Sidney Crosby scored for the Penguins. The second period had Ruslan Salei of the Red Wings among the only scorers for the team while the Penguins
men on the scorecard included Bret Sterling and Craig Ryan once again.
The game also saw the Red Wings power forward Johan Franzen being hit by Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik on the leg. This resulted in him being carried away with 1 minute 43 seconds left in the first period.
Red Wings Coach Mike Babcock said, “They are concerned about Johan’s thigh and they hope it is nothing serious. While talking about the game, Mike said, “They learned from their mistakes over here and hope that they do not repeat them.”
