NHL Update – Weekend Roundup

Philadelphia Flyers win 4-1 against the New York Rangers to register their 5th straight win

The Philadelphia Flyers played host to the New York Rangers this Saturday. The Flyers who are currently leading the standings were in good shape ahead of the match and capitalized from their current form to win the match 4-1.
The first period of the match saw both the teams start out very strongly in defence as well as in offence. They had chances of taking the lead but the similar strategies adopted by both teams hindered them from scoring during the course of 20 minutes of
play.
The first period saw the Philadelphia Flyers making 11 goal attempts while the New York Rangers made 7 goal attempts.
The 2nd period saw both teams start off in a very strong manner again, but they couldn’t capitalize from the chances they got. Though both teams came close to scoring on several occasions, none of the shots found the back of the net.
However, the home side managed to score the first goal of the match in the 10th minute. The goal was scored by Nikolay Zherdev from a spectacular backhand shot that set the home crowd wild. Though there were many more scoring opportunities during
the course of the period, no further goals were scored with the Flyers leading 1-0.
The final period of the match saw the Flyers start on a high to score in the 4th minute to double their lead. The goal was scored by Andreas Nodl from a decent flick shot. The New York Rangers managed to pull one goal back in the 9th
minute as they scored through Derek Stephen from a powerful strike.
Philadelphia Flyers was able to respond to this with a goal in the very next minute to regain a 2 goal lead. The goal was scored by Ville Leino from a brilliantly fired shot that went quickly into the back of the net.
The Philadelphia Flyers sealed the win with the final goal of the match in the 16th minute through Nikolay Zherdev once again, who bagged his second for the night as the Flyers won the match 4-1.
Washington Capitals misery continues as they lose their 8th straight game 2-3 against the Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins and the Washington Capitals were both going through some tough times in the season ahead of the match with the Capitals losing the last 7 straight games and the Boston Bruins losing the last 3 straight games. One of the two teams was sure
to taste victory this time out but unfortunately it wasn’t the Washington Capitals.
Boston made a great start to the match and scored the first goal in the 4th minute to get into the lead. The goal was scored by Patrice Bergeron from a powerful strike. The Boston Bruins continued to pile pressure on the away side and managed
to score once again in the 9th minute to double their lead. This time the goal was scored by Andrew Ference. Boston scored once again in the 18th minute to take the score to 3-0 through Blake Wheeler.
The 2nd period saw the Washington Capitals score in the 3rd minute through Matt Bradley’s backhand shot but there wasn’t anything else to talk about. This was the only goal of the period and the score was 3-1 in favour of the home team
at the end of the 2nd period.
The final period was again on a slower side with only 1 goal scored. The goal was scored by the Washington Capitals in the 15th minute through Karl Alzner from a powerful strike that went flying into the back of the net. The period and the match
ended with the Boston Bruins winning the match 3-2.
