NHL Updates – Detroit Red Wings win 5-3 against the Edmonton Oilers
Edmonton Oilers hosted Detroit Red Wings in the 589th game of the regular season this Tuesday. The match was played at the Rexall Place with around 17,000 fans coming to witness the match. The match was expected to be a one sided encounter and
it turned out to be so in the second period with the Detroit Red Wings contending for the top spot in the league. The match was very tight in the first 20 minutes of play but the domination in the second period saw Detroit Red Wings winning the match 5-3 in
the end with Darren Helm named the star selection for his goal and an assist.
Detroit Red Wings made a great start to the match as they attacked right from the word go. With the very first play of the match, they could have scored but the goal keeper made a brilliant save. With the passage of time, Detroit Red Wings attacks intensified
and they finally managed to score in the 4th minute through Henrik Zetterberg to take the lead.
Detroit continued to attack but after a few minutes they took the foot off the gas. Edmonton Oilers took advantage of this and started to come up with some brilliant pieces of play. The home team successfully levelled the scores through Gilbert Brule’s goal
in the 12th minute.
Though there were a few more goal attempts made but no goals were scored as the period ended with the scores level on 1-1. Edmonton Oilers made 6 goal attempts while Detroit Red Wings made 11 goal attempts in the period.
The second period was totally dominated by Detroit Red Wings as they attacked with all of their men. However, this led to gaps left open at the back but they concentrated on offence only.
The positive approach to the game saw the Detroit Red Wings scoring in the 7th minute through Todd Bertuzzi from a wrap around shot to take the lead. Detroit Red Wings continued to attack and with the constant attacks, Edmonton’s defence crumbled
and the away side scored through Kris Draper’s backhand shot in the 11th minute once again.
Edmonton Oilers came up with late resistance but it was of no use as they weren’t able to score and the period ended with Detroit leading 3-1.
The final period of the match was evenly matched in terms of goal attempts and goals scored. During the course of the period both teams made 10 goal attempts each and scored two goals scored.
Edmonton Oilers started stronger and scored in the 5th and 12th minutes through Theo Peckham and Sam Gagner respectively to level the scores.
However, when it looked that the match was heading into overtime, Detroit scored two goals in the 18th minute through Todd Bertuzzi and Darren Helm and won the match 5-3.
The win ties the Detroit Red Wings with Vancouver Canucks for the top spot with each teams having 55 points.
