NHL Updates – Edmonton Oilers win 4-3 against the Tampa Bay Lightning
The Edmonton Oilers edged past the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 after a tense shootout. As expected the game was tight throughout with neither side willing to give anything away and when the match couldn’t be settled in overtime, it went to a shootout, where
the Oilers managed to hold their nerve in front of a packed home crowd.
The Tampa Bay Lightning made a strong start to the match as they attacked right from the start. The Lightning came close to scoring in the second
minute, only to be denied by Oilers goalkeeper Nikolai Khabibulin. However, their determination and hard work paid off as Randy Jones scored four minutes later to give his side the lead.
Tampa Bay’s advantage was almost cancelled out with the very first play after the restart, but the Oilers shot went just wide. The home team managed to level the scores in the twelfth minute through a brilliant strike by Magnus Paajarvi.
The Lightning continued to attack despite losing the lead and their persistent attacks put them in the lead once again. This time the goal scorer was Ryan Malone, who gave Tampa Bay the lead from a brilliant flick shot. During the course of the first period,
Tampa Bay Lightning made 14 goal attempts, while the Edmonton Oilers made 9 goal attempts. The Tampa Bay Lightning led 2-1 at the end of the first period.
The home side came out with a lot of energy and determination in the second period, and that aggressive mindset allowed them to score in the sixth minute to level the scores once again. The goal was scored by Taylor Hall from a wonderful flick shot.
The Edmonton Oilers were the more productive of the two teams in the period, and they scored once again in the 17th minute to take the lead. Tom Gilbert scored from a wonderful backhand shot to put the Oilers ahead for the first time in the game.
The period ended with the Oilers leading 3-2, as they made nine goal attempts while the Tampa Bay Lightning made seven attempts.
Tampa Bay Lightning dominated the third quarter and drew level in the 12th minute. Steven Stamkos fired a quick shot that caught the goalkeeper by surprise.
The period ended with the scores level on 3-3, with the Tampa Bay Lightning making 17 goal attempts and Edmonton Oilers restricted to just one goal attempt.
The match then went into overtime where no goals were scored, but Edmonton Oilers won the match through Linus Omark’s goal in shootout.
