NHL Updates – New York Rangers win 2-1 against the St. Louis Blues

St. Louis Blues played hosted to the New York Rangers at the Scottrade Arena in front of 19,000 fans playing in the 618th game of the season. The match was played with New York Rangers going through some struggling times and a win would surely
lift their confidence. This is exactly what happened as New York Rangers managed to come up with a 2-1 win. Martin Biron, goal keeper of the St. Louis Blues was named the start selection of the match for his 24 saves in the match.
The first period of the match was totally defence dominated where the offence wasn’t given any space to work. All the goal attempts were made during the course of the period where from long range. Coupled with this was the fact that most of the times the
front line players were back helping in the defence.
The mentality for both teams being defensive resulted in the period ending goalless. During the period, New York Rangers made 6 goal attempts while St. Louis Blues made just 2 goal attempts.
The second period saw both teams come out and attack right from the start of the match. St. Louis Blues had the honour of enjoying early possession. Keeping possession resulted in chances coming for both teams.
St. Louis Blues struck first blood as they scored through Brad Winchester from a tip in shot in the 3rd minute. Both teams continued to work hard in order to score and establish a firm grip on the match.
New York Rangers finally managed to open their account as Derek Stephan scored in the 10th minute through a spectacular flick shot which levelled the scores. New York Rangers continued to attack which resulted in another goal scored by Sean Avery
in the 17th minute that put the Rangers into the lead.
There were several more goal attempts before the period ended with New York Rangers leading 2-1. During the period, New York Rangers made 13 goal attempts while St. Louis Blues made 15 goal attempts.
The final period was a reflection of the first period and was totally dominated by the defences of both teams. There were a few chances for both teams but the poor finishing coupled with the strong defence resulted in no goals scored during the period.
 5 goal attempts each were made by the teams as the match ended with the New York Rangers winning the match 2-1.
