NHL Updates – St. Louis Blues win 4-2 against the high flying Atlanta Thrashers
The 497th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series was played at the Philips Arena, home of the Atlanta Thrashers. The home team played host to the St. Louis Blues. The match was predicted to be won by the Thrashers as they had scored 13
goals in the last 2 games. However, it was not their day as they were overpowered by St. Louis Blues who won the match 4-2. This was the 33rd game of the season for the St. Louis Blues while the Thrashers played the 36th game of the season.
Both teams made a decent start to the match. The start was cautious though occasional risks were taken to score but they were calculated risks. The backline was well in place in the starting few minutes. The away side was the stronger of the two teams in
offence at the start. They displayed some excellent passing and shooting abilities and successfully scored in the 6th minute to take the lead.
The goal was scored as a result of good combination between Chris Porter and the goal scorer Brad Boyes. However, the lead didn’t last long as the home team managed to level the scores in the very next minute. The goal was scored by Bryan Little from a well
placed flick shot.
The period ended with the scores level on 1-1 with the St. Louis Blues making 10 goal attempts while the Thrashers made 12 goal attempts.
The 2nd period saw both the teams continue with the same strategy that they opted for in the first period. The goal attempts were almost the same as during the first period for each team but the productivity was again low.
In fact only one goal was scored during the course of 20 minutes of play. It was a long coming as the goal was scored after a lot of hard work by the away side who took the lead. The goal was scored by Alexandre Steen from a brilliant flick shot in the 19th
minute.
The period ended with the score 2-1 in favour of the St. Louis Blues as they made 8 goal attempts and Atlanta Thrashers made 11 goal attempts.
The final period St. Louis Blues scored early in the 2nd minute to double their lead. The goal was scored by Alex Pietrangelo. Atlanta Thrashers knew that if they had any chance of a win then they had to score as soon as possible. The home side
cut the lead to one goal as they scored through Dustin Byfuglien in the 13th minute.
However, St. Louis Blues sealed the win with the final goal in the 20th minute to win 4-2. The goal was scored by Vladimir Sobotka and the period and the match ended on this. During the final period Atlanta Thrashers made 16 goal attempts while
St. Louis Blues made 9 goal attempts.
During the match Atlanta made 39 goal attempts while St. Louis Blues made 27 goal attempts and the star selection was agreed upon to be Alexandre Steen.
