NHL Updates – Washington Capitals win 3-2 against Florida Panthers in a classic weekend encounter

Another one of the weekend encounters saw Washington Capitals play host to the Florida Panthers. The match was played at the Verizon Centre in front of 18,000 fans. The match was a very evenly contested till the very end which saw Washington Capitals managing
to come up with a 3-2 win with Mike Green of the Capitals named the star selection for his goal and an assist.
The match saw both teams start off slowly but the Florida Panthers still managed to come up with scoring chances early on in the period. With the passage of time, the Panthers had momentum in their favour. Coupled with this was the fact that they kept possession
for long periods of time which didn’t allow the Capitals to settle down.
As a result of the domination and hard work, Florida Panthers scored through Mike Santorelli from a brilliant backhand shot to take the lead. Both teams came up with a few more shots on goal in the remaining part of the period. The period was dominated by
defence as there weren’t many goal attempts.
Florida Panthers led 1-0 heading into the break and made 6 goal attempts in the period while Washington Capitals made 5 goal attempts.
The second period saw the game open up a little as the teams attacked more often. Both teams were determinate to score goals but only one goal was scored during the 20 minutes of play.
The goal was scored in favour of Washington Capitals by Eric Fehr from a splendid flick shot. There were several goal attempts made by the teams in the period but unfortunately, no further goals were scored. The period ended with the score on 1-1 with Capitals
making 12 goal attempts while Panthers made 9 goal attempts.
After a slow start to the final period by both teams, the match took up pace. Both teams attacked with all of their men involved in the attacks.
The result was Washington Capitals scoring two goal in quick succession to go ahead by two goals. The first goal was scored by Mike Green from a tip in shot in the 14th minute while the second was scored by Alex Ovechkin from a powerful strike
in the 17th minute.
Florida Panthers managed to score in the final minute through Evgeny Dadonov’s backhand shot but it was a little too late and the match ended with Washington Capitals winning the match 3-2.
