NHL Weekend Roundup: St. Louis Blues and Edmonton Oilers emerge on top
Colorado Avalanche lose 2-0 to St. Louis Blues at home
The 26th of September 2010, the St. Louis Blues were up against the Colorado Avalanche. The game took place at the Pepsi Arena, home of the Colorado Avalanche.
The game as expected was more of a defensive battle in which chances were few and whatever chances came in the team’s way; they had to grab them in order to win. This is exactly what the St. Louis Blues did despite having the disadvantage of being the away
team. The St. Louis Blues won by two goals to nil at the end.
Both teams made regular attempts on goal but all of these were planned considering the fact that neither of the team was caught off guard if they lost possession. However, with the constant pressure that the St. Louis Blues were putting on the Colorado
Avalanche, they managed to score in the eighth minute through T.J Oshie. The goal was a result of a splendid shot from 35 feet.
After this, the rest of the period finished with not a lot to discuss. The second period saw the home team, Colorado Avalanche come up with much better performance as they managed to break through the St. Louis Blues defence quite a few times. With the slender
lead of one goal, the away team decided to stay on the defence that resulted in the Colorado Avalanche coming with regular shot on goal but none were able to find their way into the opposing team’s goal.
The third and final period also started with the same flow but after the middle part of the period, the St. Louis Blues started to come up with counter attacks of their own. They had a chance to score in the 16th minute when the Colorado Avalanche
was caught off guard. However, the shot went well off target. With a few minutes, remaining and only one goal behind, the Colorado Avalanche pressed forward. However, to their disappointment, they were caught off guard on a counter attack once again and this
time the St. Louis Blues scored in the final minutes by a 6 feet shot by Brad Boyes.
The man of the match was the centre player in the St. Louis Blues, T.J Oshie. While Craig Anderson, goalie of the Colorado Avalanche emerged as the second star selection as the Colorado lost the match 2-0.
Edmonton Oilers win 8-2 against the Vancouver Canucks
The 51st game of the preseason took place this past Sunday in the Rexall Place, home of the Edmonton Oilers. The game was anticipated to be an exciting one; therefore, a crowd of seventeen thousand came to witness it.
Indeed, this was by far the most exciting game in the preseason as the Edmonton Oilers thrashed the Vancouver Canucks 8-2. From the start to finish, the Edmonton Oilers dominated the proceedings in every department of the game.
This resulted in the Edmonton Oilers scoring twice in the opening five minutes. The first goal came through Jordan Eberle from a 24 feet shot. The second goal came in the fifth minute thanks to 8 feet tip-in by Dustin Penner.
The away team responded to this and scored in the seventh minute through Malhotra from a distance of 12 feet. There was so much happening in the game that the Edmonton Oilers scored immediately within the next 20 seconds through a Horcoff shot from 13 feet.
The score at the time was 3-1 in favour of the Oilers. They further pressed on and managed to score once again in the seventeenth minute through Jordan Eberle once again.
The second period was less happening but the Edmonton Oilers struck first in the second period through Vande Velde. The score was 5-1 in favour of the home team already and with the game they were playing, experts expected them to score again. Then they
shifted their gears and preferred not to attack so much. This sudden change in strategy cost them a goal as the Vancouver Canucks scored in the eighteenth minute of the second period through Keslar to take the score to 2-5.
The third period was again dominated by the Edmonton Oilers as they scored in the opening minute of the period through Horcoff once again. They managed to score in the very next minute once again through Linus Omark to take the score to 7-2 in favour of
the home team.
Last but not the least, the Edmonton Oilers’ scored the last goal of the match in the fifteenth minute through Dustin Penner’s second goal to seal the victory. The match ended on a score line of 8-2 in favour of the Edmonton Oilers. Jordon Eberle was named
star player of the match.
