NHL announces nominations for 2011-2012 Lady Byng Memorial Trophy award-NHL News
The National Hockey League (NHL) has nominated three players for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy award of this year and the common factor among all those players is that they were successful in avoiding the plenty box most of the time during the 2011-2012
season.
One of them is going to be voted to be the most deserving player of the award, which will be handed over to him at a ceremony at the Encore Theatre at Wynn Las Vegas.
The ceremony is almost an event of festivity, attended by film and TV industry celebrities, current and former sports personalities and notable figures from other sections of the society.
This year’s nominations are New York Islanders’ left wing, Matt Moulson, Florida Panthers’ defenseman, Brian Campbell and Edmonton Oilers’ right wing, Jordan Eberle.
Lady Byng Memorial Trophy award is given "to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability."
The Professional Hockey Writers' Association selects the final winner through their votes. The process of voting is completed well before the final ceremony, which is scheduled for June 20, 2012.
All three nominated players have performed remarkably well and tried to keep themselves away from penalty box as much as they could.
As their conduct is one of the factors behind their nomination to be the award’s contenders, it itself approves of their discipline on ice.
If Campbell wins the award, he will be the first defenseman to receive the honour since 1953-54 NHL season for which the exclusive feat went to Red Kelly.
Campbell is the second best defenseman of the league this season. He has 53 points and 49 assists to his record. He played 82 games in total.
Eberle, the other player nominated for the award, has recorded 76 points, 34 goals, 42 assists and 10 power-play goals. Most importantly, he was able to cut his penalty minutes from 22 in 2010 to 10 this season, which shows a significant improvement in his
overall conduct.
Moulson has 36 goals, 69 points and 33 assists to his record.
