NHL fines Edmonton Oilers’ coach Tom Renney $10K for remarks over officials-NHL News
The National Hockey League (NHL), the representative body and regulators of the American-Canadian ice hockey’s premier league, confirmed to have imposed a fine on Edmonton Oilers’ head coach, Tom Renney.
Renney has been asked to pay $10,000 in fine over his criticism of on-ice NHL officials due to some controversial calls they had made during their game against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday, April 02, 2012.
The penalty was seen to be very much likely following the comments from the coach, as the league office, which intends to maintain a zero-tolerance policy, has not spared anyone as far as the criticism on their officials is concerned.
Some of the reports emerging around the game had pointed out at the coach apparently being unhappy over some uneven officiating and expressed his annoyance over those decisions while responding to one of the questions.
To a question, he remarked:
“I’m not sure (why). Maybe (they) need Hollywood in the playoffs. I’m not sure.”
The league took note of his remarks immediately and after going through related protocols and rules has come up with the decision of imposing $10,000 penalty on the coach.
Following the announcement of the fine, no comment has come from the team or the coach himself about the handling of the issue by the league office.
Oilers lost the game with the 0-2 goal difference and overall, the matchup turned out to be more frustrating for the team’s officials as well as players.
Renney is the only member to have expressed his frustration openly and paid the price for his outspoken attitude at the end.
There is no confirmation if he intends to appeal against the fine or otherwise has accepted it to be his mistake and willing to pay for it.
He has become the third official to have been fined by the league most recently. Other two officials, each from the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins are the coaches as well.
Flyers’ head coach, Peter Laviolette, has been asked to pay $10,000 for his heated arguments with Tony Granato, the assistant coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins’s, who was also made to pay $2,500 for his part in the brawl.
Flyers-Penguins game is probably the only game of this season to have been played in rather rough and controversial environment.
At one point, the coaches were face-to-face while screaming and shouting at each other. The players from both sides had also been subjected to rough plays and hits, resulting in minor injuries to a couple of them.
Following closure of the game, the league office found the coaching staff in violation of its related protocols and rules and penalised them.
Earlier, both officials had been ejected from the game.
