NHL latest – New York Islanders win 2-1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning during overtime
New York Islanders playing host to the Tampa Bay Lightning was the first game of Wednesday. The match was played at the Nassau Coliseum with around 7,000 fans coming to witness the match. The match was predicted to be won by the Tampa Bay Lightning as the
New York Islanders were struggling down in the bottom half of the standings. This was the 502nd game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series with the Tampa Bay Lightning playing their 34th game while the New York Islanders played the
31st game of the campaign.
The home team was cheered onto the pitch by the home fans at the start of the match. They were fully backed at the start of the match. But the Islanders managed to come up with a few shots at the start of the period.
After that the period was totally dominated by the away side. If we talk about possession, shooting or defending the away side was on top. They didn’t give the home team any space and time to settle. The Tampa Bay Lightning coupled the strong defence with
even a stronger offence.
The hard work and determination up front saw them scoring to break the deadlock in the 12th minute. The goal was scored by Ryan Malone from a decent strike. The away side had numerous goal scoring opportunities but they failed to capitalize.
The period ended with the Tampa Bay Lightning leading 1-0. During the period the New York Islanders made just 3 goal attempts while the Tampa Bay Lightning made 16 goal attempts.
The 2nd period was evenly matched as both the sides came up with attacks frequently but their emphasis was on defence. There were only a few occasions when the offensive players got past the defence.
During the period the New York Islanders looked stronger with the pin point passing and outstanding long range shooting. The home side successfully scored in the 20th minute to level the scores. The goal was scored by PA Parenteau from a very
well placed flick shot.
The period ended with the scores level on 1-1 with the Tampa Bay Lightning making 9 goal attempts while the New York Islanders made 10 goal attempts.
The final period also saw both the teams coming out with more of a defensive mentality. During the period the Tampa Bay Lightning made 9 goal attempts while the Islanders made 10 goal attempts but no goals were scored leading to overtime.
During overtime, John Tavares scored in the 4th minute to win the match for the Islanders 2-1. New York Islanders goalie Dwayne Roloson was named the star selection of the match as he made 34 saves in the match.
