Detroit Red Wings win 5-3 against New York Rangers at Joe Louis Arena
The match between the New York Rangers and the Detroit Red Wings took place on Sunday 26th September at Joe Louis Arena.
Right from the moment when the first period begun, the Detroit Red Wings came up with a flurry of shots hoping that one of them would get past the New York Rangers goal keeper.
Though the New York Rangers were strong in defence, the fast and skilful approach adopted by the Detroit Red Wings found a way past the New York Rangers goalie in the second minute. Dan Cleary was the goal scorer from a distance of 11-feet that put the Detroit
Rangers in the lead.
The home team backed by around fifteen thousand fans found their way past the goalie once again in the fourth minute thanks to backhand shot from 12-feet by Henrik Zetterberg. Throughout the period, Detroit Red Wings dominated the proceedings but during
the middle of the period the New York Rangers looked stronger.
The New York Rangers came up with good passing and excellent playmaking. Consequently, the Rangers scored in the tenth minute through Sean Avery from a distance of 27-feet.
The rest of the period saw the New York Rangers come up with 3 more shots. At the end of the period, both teams managed to make 7 goal attempts out of which the Rangers scored once and the Detroit Red Wings managed to score twice. The home team was cheered
off the pitch by the fans after the period ended 2-1 in their favour.
At the end of the first period New York Rangers Head Coach, John Tortorella said “it is still the first period of the match and I am expecting my team to bounce back despite the fact that the Red Wings have been able to maintain a good tight defence”.
The second period begun slowly with both teams sitting back and were hesitant in their approach while being on the offense. Nice and smooth exchange of passes along with defence was observed until the sixth minute when Rafalski scored from 37-feet for the
Detroit Red Wings. The score at the time was 3-1 in favour of the Red Wings.
The turning point in the match was observed when the Rangers were 2 goals down. Though, the Detroit Red Wings had managed to form a strong backline, the New York Rangers tried to get past it every now and then. They succeeded in doing so, in the twelfth
minute and grabbing this opportunity, Erik Christensen scored.
Then Detroit Red Wings were still settling when after the first steal of possession, the New York Rangers scored again and stunned the fans and the Red Wings by levelling the match at 3-3. Ranger’s goal came through a 16-feet tip-in by Artem Anisimov.
Though at the end of the second period the Detroit Red Wings managed to pile up 15 shots, they managed to score only once. On the contrary, the New York Rangers netted twice from the six goal attempts they made.
At the end of the second period, the captain of the Detroit Red Wings, Nicklas Lidstorm said “we were in the lead and lost it. It was unfortunate that we conceded two goals in a matter of seconds through lapse of concentration but now we will go in the last
period giving all we have and try to win”.
This is indeed what happened and the Detroit Red Wings didn’t disappoint thousands of fans that came there in support. The Red Wings dominated the period throughout and managed to score twice out of the 12 goal attempts they made.
The first goal of the period came in the fifth minute through a 23-foot bullet strike by Tomas Holstorm and the second came in the eighteenth minute from a 47-foot strike by Patrick Eaves.
The game ended with the Detroit Red Wings wining the match 5-3. The Head Coach of the Detroit Red Wings Mike Babcock said “though the Rangers managed their way back into the match, I was sure that if we come up with our best game we could win it and that’s
exactly what we did”.
