NHLPA puts forth proposal of their own as meetings over new labour deal resume -NHL Update
With some deep thinking over the weekend, it seems as if the National Hockey League (NHL) Players’ Association are ready to make things happen in a professional way by submitting a counter proposal of their own on Tuesday, August 14, 2012.
Talks about a new labour deal not being able to be met by the current deadline, September 15, and could have possibly landed both sides in hot waters with another lockout.
The initial proposal by the Players’ Association was mainly covering the economic issues faced by the players during the two-hour long meeting.
"It's clear to me that they didn't put it together in an hour or two, and, as a result, we're going to need a little bit of time to evaluate it, to understand it," Commissioner Bettman said. "We told them that we would go back to our offices to do that and
we would be prepared to meet again [Wednesday] morning, which is what we're going to do."
At the moment, no one from the league’s side is commenting on the proposal and whether it is something that they might or might not agree to. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday.
"Our hope is to spend whatever time it takes this afternoon and this evening to review the proposal because if we're going to respond we want to respond appropriately," Bettman added. "Obviously, if we can't finish our analysis and evaluation today we may
need more time tomorrow, but our hope is to be in a position tomorrow to get back together."
If both sides agree, it is believed that the season may continue for another three seasons under the current contract but the NHL is believed to be going all out to have a lockout instead of caving into the labour union’s demands.
Without a doubt, both stakeholders know that they will eventually benefit from a regular season going on and no lockout and are trying their all to get a deal in place before it. But for now, there is no telling what might happen in the upcoming weeks or
even months.
The next update should be expected on Wednesday.
