NHL’s Boston Bruins sign Aaron Johnson for one-year in a two-way deal –NHL Free Agency Update
Boston Bruins have made their defence-line even stronger as they signed the 6-foot-1, 204 pounder, Aaron Johnson for one-year in a two-way deal.
The contract says that Johnson will get $650,000 for representing Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League (NHL) and $105,000 for representing their affiliates, Grand Rapids Griffins, in the American Hockey League (AHL).
The 29-year-old Canadian will accompany Garnet Exelby in the defence-line, who is just one year older than him and equally experienced as him.
Exelby, who is also a Canadian, was signed earlier this month on the fifth, in a deal which was very much similar to Johnson’s. He was also signed for one year, in a two-way deal, which will make him eligible to play for both Boston Bruins and Grand Rapids
Griffins.
Both of them would be expected to provide depth to the back-line of the team.
But signing Gareth Exelby and Aaron Johnson may not be good news for Mike Mottau of U.S.
The 34-year-old defenseman was traded from New York Islanders in the February of this year, along with 39-year-old forward Brian Rolstan, in the exchange of 24-year-old, Canadian right wingers, Yannick Riendeau and Marc Cantin.
Mottau, having already represented five NHL teams, New York Rangers, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, New York Islander and Boston Bruins, played six regular season games last season and two playoff games but could not make his mark as he failed to score
a single goal or an assist for Boston Bruins.
After signing of Johnson and Exelby, re-signing Mottau looks difficult now.
Johnson himself has played for five different NHL teams since making his debut with Columbus Blue Jackets in 2003-2004 season, the place where he has spent most of his time.
He actually started his hockey career in the Quebec Junior Major Hockey League (QJMHL) in 1999-2000 season with Rimouski Oceanic. Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia born played their three season and then, was traded to Quebec Remparts, before making his NHL debut
with Columbus Blue Jackets in the next season. Johnson, then played for New York Islanders, Calgary Flames, Chicago Blackhawks, Edmonton Oilers and then Columbus Blue Jackets again before making his last and most recent move to Boston Bruins.
