NIKE Advertisement jinxed the FIFA World Cup 2010 big football stars
Just before the FIFA World Cup 2010, NIKE came up with a new advertisement showing all the big football stars of this generation. Although they were all supposed to be the “stars” of their respective countries, apparently nothing of that sort happened in their actual World Cup campaign.
It was seen by all the fans that every superstar that the NIKE advertisement showed, suffered something harsh in the FIFA World Cup 2010. Let’s take a look at all the stars that featured in this advertisement and see what happened to them:
Didier Drogba, Ivory Coast:
Didier Drogba was injured right before the World Cup and was expected not to play for his country, Ivory Coast. The African Elephants were the best African team and were unluckily paired up with Brazil, Portugal and the semi-pro Korea DPR. Drogba, throughout the FIFA World Cup 2010, failed to impress anyone. He scored only one goal and could not change anything for his team, as they were eliminated in the first round.
Fabio Cannavaro, Italy:
The Italian captain totally failed to deliver anything. The defending champions, Azzurri, were in a group in which they were considered to be the favourites. Fabio Cannavaro, who is considered to be one of the best defenders in the world, could not change the fate of his team. They were eliminated in the very first round; leaving all the fans in shock.
Franck Ribery, France:
The French number 7 could not do much for his country either, in a squad that had a lot of differences between themselves. France could not even qualify for the Round of 16. France had to face the very impressive South American sides Uruguay and Mexico, along with the host nation South Africa. Ribery did not even do enough to save his country from the host nation, South Africa, and they could only score one point, finishing fourth in their group. Their defeat against the South Africa and how they were knocked out of the World Cup was a shock to the world as well. In this World Cup, Ribery lived up to his reputation of an 'overrated' player.
Wayne Rooney, England:
No one can forget how England was screaming to the whole world about their in-form Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney. Sadly, for the English fans, Wayne Rooney totally failed to deliver in the FIFA World Cup 2010. In the NIKE advertisement, Rooney becomes a star later on when he scores for the English team, which did not happen in the World Cup even once. However, the first part of the advertisement did come out to be true, where fans are shown tearing his posters off the wall. England were knocked out of the World Cup by the Germans, who, interestingly enough, had none of their players in the advertisement.
Theo Walcott, England:
It’s just funny for the Arsenal Winger how his World Cup dream was shattered by the English coach, Fabio Capello. Sadly, he did not even manage to get on the aeroplane with the English team, even after his fabulous performance against Barcelona in the Champions League. He was not even a part of the 22 man squad that was taken to England by the Italian coach. His appearance in the advertisement just puts a smile on the critics’ faces.
Ronaldinho, Brazil:
The Brazilian star had the best moves in the advertisement, and sadly, just like Theo Walcott, he was not selected by the Brazilian coach, Dunga, for the tournament. It would be his last World Cup, probably, and Dunga did not take the Brazilian legend along to play for his country. However, the Brazilian team, for now, is playing at its best. Ronaldinho, just like other players in the advertisement, has been jinxed.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal:
The Portuguese and Real Madrid star was rarely seen in the game against Spain. He did not even kick the ball properly according to many critics. In fact, at the end of the game, he spat at a cameraman and left the field in anger. He could not create many opportunities for his team, and got his first ever International goal in sixteen months by luck, after the ball bounced on his back a few hundred times. Ronaldo did not meet the expectations he was supposed to, touching the ball only 11 times against Spain, in a match that was supposed to change the course of their role in the World Cup.
Landon Donovan, USA:
Although he had a fantastic run in the team of USA, he could not help his country qualify for the next round. He tried his best, but the other team members failed to connect in their last match against Ghana.
Cesc Fabregas, Spain:
Even though his team has advanced to the top 8 of the FIFA World Cup 2010, he did not get much time on the field to prove something for himself. Poor Cesc barely got to see the pitch from the inside; although his existence in the team would matter because of his amazing skills with the ball and how he passes it around.
