  1. All digital cameras are easy to break. The ccd is most fragile.

Only takes one good drop or a dunking in water and it will be toast.

  2. Can't speak for the D60, but I have a D70s and it's built like a tank..... obviously it's a precision instrument with some delicate components so I wouldn't suggest trying to see if it bounces.... but I don't think you have to be paranoid about every time you tap it either, it's not made of glass (OK some of it is ....)

As previous answer says 'initialisation error, doesn't mean broken'  although if it happens a lot I'd suggest you take it back to the shop for a look.

Oh and as for the previous snide answer, there may or may not be 'better' cameras out there, but i think you've made a pretty good choice for a 1st digital camera... I hope you enjoy.

  3. A DSLR is a precision instrument. Have you ever heard the expression 'the bigger they are, the harder they fall'? This is especially true for a DSLR.

An initialization error doesn't necessarily mean the camera is 'broken'.

  4. Especially when its made mainly of plastic.

There ARE better cameras out there, cheaper, and more robust.

It seem that you bought the camera just for the name, NOT what the quality of the build is like or for what it can/cant do etc.

Good luck in getting it fixed though.
