Question:

NJ Handgun Permit and name change...?

I bought a handgun from a licensed dealer a little over a year ago in NJ and had a permit from my local police dept to purchase it. I got married since and I am not sure if the permit in my maiden name is still valid on my permit. I know I need to change the name on my ID card to match my license but I am not sure if the permit that I used for the purchase of a handgun is still valid. Thanks for any help.

  1. You only need the permit to make the purchase. After that you won't need it and it won't matter what name was on it. I keep mine for record purposes but you can just throw it away if you want to.

You can get a form to change the name on your ID card from your local PD. Its the same form used for a change of address. You'll need a copy of your marriage certificate.
