Question:

NJ Parents Responsible for Children's College Tuition?

Im a college student; my friend recently took her father to court because he was neglecting to pay her tuition ( her parents are divorced).

My Parents (married) are making ME pay for my college eduction.. Combined total household income is 6 figures, we are upper-middle class family. Only 3 children in the family. I was overlooked by many scholarships because my family made too much money; and yet my parents expect me to come up with 24k a year.

I Heard it was NJ and NY law that parents are responsible for their children's college education since its no longer considered a " luxury" but more as a "necessity"

Please help me ? can someone either link me to a helpful sight or shed some light on what they're obligations are as far as tuition ?

  1. my guess is that the obligation arose as part of the parents' divorce decree (divorcing parents typically agree that one or both parents shall pay for the children's college or contribute to a college savings fund) and not as a general legal obligation on parents to provide their children with a college education.

  2. "Tough love" is what your parents are doing.  If you are able to come up with the  money just suck it up and pay it. Once you graduate, you will take a lot of pride in paying for your own education and will inspire people who don't think they can.

  3. No, it's not a law that parents have to pay tuition. It is still a luxury, and the "estimated family contribution" is a gauge for what any member of the family, including the student him/herself, has to pay. They aren't obligated to give you a dime, really.

The only case in which New York forced a man to pay for his kid's college was when he owed back child support.
